This will be no mean task if it is achieved and already we can see that some countries are well on target while others are lagging behind. Global warming and the effect of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions on the environment is of growing concern to countries worldwide, none more so in Europe, where the European Union (EU) has pledged to deliver a fifth of the region’s energy from renewable energy sources by 2020. In response to this, many European countries have introduced targets to reduce energy use. For countries such as the UK, for example, this comes in the form of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme, introduced in April 2010 and tasked with reducing carbon emissions by businesses by 20 per cent by 2020; and then by 80 per cent by the year 2050.
