Working with sunshine

Everything starts with the sun. From life on earth, to efficient, unlimited and environmentally friendly power. Access to energy is the foundation for progress and the creation of wealth, and it is generally accepted that solar cells will become a dominant energy source in the future. Merck, a leader in chemical and materials sciences, shares this bright vision.

Crystalline silicon, thin-film, dye-sensitised and organic photovoltaics are the most important solar cell technologies, and all of these cell types can improve energy efficiency and optimize production costs. As a leading provider of high tech chemicals, German company Merck is supporting the photovoltaics industry by the development and supply of novel materials, customised formulations, and process chemicals, for a variety of printing and wet coating technologies used in industrial processes.

Naturally, crystalline solar cells still have the lead in the PV market, and Merck serves this field of application mainly with its isishape and solarpur-materials (see below). But in the mid- and long-term there will be new solutions also for other fields of application. Therefore Merck has been actively working on the future types of solar cells for some years, with dye sensitised solar cells (DSSC) and organic solar cells (OPV).

These four main product areas fall under the same company brand: Working With Sunshine. All four are easy to use and help customers to improve performance, reduce production costs and boost the energy output of their solar cells.

We take a closer look at the four main areas.
