A large residential complex in Malmö, Sweden, is embracing solar energy through a strategic photovoltaic rollout led by BBK Group AB and supported by advanced technologies from KOSTAL, REC, and K2 Systems. This project showcases the integration of reliable, high-quality components in a challenging urban environment.

Why Photovoltaics in Housing Estates Matter Originally built under Sweden’s 'Million Programme,' Malmöhus 24 comprises 540 apartments across 15 buildings. The growing need for clean, cost-effective energy makes such complexes ideal candidates for PV deployment. Key motivations include:

  • Demand for sustainable, cost-saving energy solutions.
  • Technical challenges in retrofitting older, high-rise buildings.
  • Need for expertise in high-wind load and complex roof installations.

Strategic Component Selection and Project Coordination BBK Group transitioned from project management to full-scale PV installations by emphasizing product quality and safety. The team chose KOSTAL inverters for their EU-based R&D, local technical support, and proven efficiency. Project success was supported by:

  • Coordination between suppliers, engineers, and installers.
  • Long-term relationships with developers like Riksbyggen and HSB.
  • Use of the K2 Dome Zero system, which allows permit-free installation parallel to roof pitches.

Installation Success and Technical Highlights Since 2016, six buildings have been equipped with solar systems, totaling 650 kWp of installed power and 17 KOSTAL inverters. The system includes:

  • REC N-Peak and TwinPeak5 panels.
  • 2048 modules producing over 550,000 kWh annually.
  • Integration into building power systems for resident and equipment use (e.g., ventilation, elevators, EV charging).

Economic and Environmental Benefits The initial break-even point was projected at eight years, but due to rising energy prices post-nuclear shutdowns, the systems reached ROI in just four years. The setup now generates clean energy at scale, showcasing the long-term value of well-planned solar investments.

By prioritizing coordination, component quality, and expert installation, this Malmö project illustrates how urban PV systems can drive down costs and support environmental goals.
