Embracing the winds of change

A familiar operator in the engineering sector, Global Marine Systems Limited has long ploughed its own successful furrow in the world’s oceans and waterways. Today, the company embarks on a return to the power market – and notably, offshore wind – in what promises to be a landmark strategic shift. We spoke to Nicola Broom, the company’s Director of Sales & Commercial.

PES: Welcome to PES. Would you like to introduce yourself and the company?

Nicola Broom: Global Marine Systems Limited is a leading provider of engineering and underwater services, responding to the subsea cable installation, maintenance and burial requirements of customers, and offering a comprehensive end-to-end solution for multiple offshore industries including Oil & Gas, power, telecoms and deep sea research. The company has a legacy in excess of 160 years in deep and shallow water operations, and operates worldwide with its main offices in Chelmsford, UK and Singapore.

PES: And how do you currently serve the wind industry?

NB: Global Marine’s track record of bringing power and fibre optic connectivity to the offshore wind market is extensive and well proven. Since the very early noughties, the company has completed a number of landmark subsea cable installations at wind farms off the coast of the UK, as well as numerous sites across Europe including the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

For example, back in 2002 Global Marine installed 85 km of cable for Dong at their Horns Rev site in Denmark, which was Europe’s first commercial wind farm. For this particular project, power cables including approximately 160 turbine connections, were buried up to 2m below the seabed.
