Diving into the details of 3D subsea cable route inspection


EIVA is a pioneering Denmark-based company that provides software, hardware and integrated solutions for virtually any offshore task in the survey, construction and services industry. We asked one of the organisation’s technical experts to provide us with an in-depth look at how it meets the challenges of subsea visualisation.

To ensure safe and efficient operation of cable route structures, locations and state must be adequately identified. EIVA a/s, which specialises in software and hardware solutions for the offshore industry, decided to provide customers with a dedicated 3D subsea cable route inspection software solution that does exactly that, thereby solving the challenges posed by the standard approach of carrying out inspection operations with 2D visualisation tools.

This led to the development of the software solution NaviSuite Nardoa, which allows for data acquisition and processing during subsea cable route inspection operations and includes advanced 3D modelling and visualisation features. Moreover, the software offers near real-time, detailed visualisation and processing of large data sets, thereby reducing the time frame of the inspection operation to a minimum and improving the quality of the results.

Solving the challenge of visualisation limits during cable route inspections
For many years, 2D visualisation has been the standard approach to cable route inspection. However, in regard to both video and 2D profiles of the cable, the visual presentation is rarely satisfactory. Fish and other visual disturbances found on the seabed and data noise that is difficult and time-consuming to clean reduce the quality of the visualisation. Combined with the limited amount of valid data available, this means that the inspection team often have to guess rather than base their conclusions on facts during processing and eventing.
