British tech to support Parkwind’s wind energy drive

Parkwind, a subsidiary of Japanese energy giant JERA Nex, has partnered with a team of UK tech experts as it continues to help the world transition to a net-zero future.

The company has signed a deal with British clean-tech scale-up Kinewell Energy to procure its pioneering cable layout optimisation software.

The Kinewell Layout Optimisation of Cable (KLOC) software utilises AI-powered technology to rapidly design optimised inter-array cable layouts for offshore wind farms.

KLOC uses advanced mathematical optimisation algorithms to produce economically optimised layouts with greater reliability, saving on average 20% of cable system capex, while streamlining early-stage development.

The deal will see Parkwind use the software during design and development stages for all its planned offshore wind farms.

Elien Van Winckel, cable installation manager at Parkwind, said: “Parkwind aimed to find a solution that could simplify the creation of inter-array cable layouts and enhance overall optimisation. We are thrilled to start utilising KLOC from Kinewell Energy and are eager to explore the benefits it will bring to our organisation.”

Since launching in 2015, KLOC has been utilised by some of the world’s leading renewable energy producers, with Parkwind the latest to incorporate the solution into its technology stack.

The success has seen the Newcastle-upon-Tyne-headquartered cleantech company increase its headcount by 55% over the past 12 months and with further projects in the pipeline, the company is expecting 2024-2025 will be yet another year of growth.

Dr Andrew Jenkins, founder and CEO of Kinewell Energy, said: “We set up Kinewell Energy back in 2015 to explore how new and emerging technologies could support the global transition to a net-zero society and KLOC is a perfect example of how we are realising what we set out to achieve.

“By significantly speeding up and reducing the cost of designing and developing offshore wind farms, our software solutions are making it easier and more beneficial than ever before for progressive, forward-thinking energy producers such as Parkwind to scale up their renewable energy portfolios.

“It is one of the world’s leading energy producers and we are delighted that this partnership will enable us to participate in the upgrading of the group’s capability to generate cleaner, greener energy for years to come.”
