The need for battery storage systems is growing worldwide, at the same rate as the expansion of renewable energies, especially photovoltaic energy. While yields from renewable energy sources fluctuate over the course of a day and a year, for example because a PV installation does not absorb solar energy overnight or during winter, a storage system can balance supply and consumption.
A battery can keep the energy stored during the day for times when demand is higher, thus helping the user to increase their self-consumption and save costs, or become less dependent on energy companies. But this is far from the only possible use; battery storage systems are extremely versatile. As well as using time shifting to increase self-consumption from PV installations, they can also help to keep power consumption constant and avoid expensive peak loads via peak shaving.
