A complete range of sun to socket options

Leonardo Botti, Global Head of Product Management,
ABB Solar, talks to PES about their solid technical expertise and knowledge. His company continually invests in R&D and has a wide ranging portfolio of integrated services and solutions.

PES: Welcome back to PES Solar/PV publication. Thanks for talking with us. For the benefit of our new readers would you like to begin by explaining a little about the background of ABB and the importance of the Solar/PV industry to you?

Leonardo Botti: ABB Solar has over 10 years’ experience in the solar inverter sector which is underpinned by solid technical expertise and knowledge in the power conversion industry, where we have been active for over 40 years.

Today, our global footprint in solar is extensive. We have active sales and service in more than 100 countries worldwide, dedicated solar specialists in more than 30 countries and five operation facilities.

Our agility and international presence enables us to expertly navigate and focus on growth in mature and developing economies, while keeping pace with emerging technologies such as storage, smart grids and microgrids, as well as reacting to local market requirements.

As such, ABB is consistently investing in R&D with extensive testing and development of its portfolio to deliver integrated solutions and lifecycle services which optimise performance, reliability and return on investment of any solar installation, and fulfil the requirements of local markets.

We offer a complete ‘sun to socket’ portfolio, as we make ardent strides to ensuring our solar technology is a leading sustainable energy source for distributed power generation and building applications. Our portfolio includes everything from LVdc components and MVac turnkey solutions, from transformers and medium-voltage technology, to integration, solar and energy storage with our ABB free@home offering and EV charging solutions.

PES: Are you currently experiencing more growth in this market? In what areas particularly are you seeing
this growth?

LB: In the past, the solar industry was dominated by a few markets including the large gigawatt heavy weights of the USA, Germany and Italy. The present and future will continue to see the shift from feed-in tariffs to the adoption of self-consumption and better, more efficient storage capabilities. In utility-scale PV, the market is focused on power generation.

We see the potential in driving global growth, as the market broadens and continues to spread across new geographies and emerging countries, across residential, commercial and industrial, along with Utility and Microgrid applications.
