Vestas releases three new 3 MW turbines to the market

Vestas releases to the market three new product variants of the 3 MW platform, the V112-3.3 MW, the V117-3.3 MW and the V126-3.3 MW and announces the largest onshore project in Denmark will use the new 3 MW machines. The turbines are developed from the same proven and popular technology of the V112-3.0 MW, enabling customers to benefit from increased annual energy production across low, medium and high wind sites, higher reliability as well as more effective service and spare part operations.

Vestas has already sold three projects in Scandinavia utilising the new 3 MW variants totalling approximately 100 MW which were sold in the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. One of these projects is the Noerhede Hjortmose project which will be located in the western part of Denmark in the heartland of Vestas and, once completed, will be the largest onshore wind power plant in Denmark. The contract for the Noerhede Hjortmose project includes a twenty-year service contract which features Vestas’ production based availability guarantee, a Vestas AOM 5000 solution.

“Since the V112-3.0 was launched to the market, Vestas has strategically focused on optimising the technology to provide greater performance and expand the platform to cover low, medium and high wind sites,” says CTO of Vestas Wind Systems A/S, Anders Vedel and continues: “The fact that we have already managed to sell three projects with these new 3 MW variants truly shows that our customers appreciate our development strategy.”

“The addition of the V117-3.3 MW and increasing nominal power by 10 per cent across all our 3 MW turbines has enabled the entire platform to deliver greater energy production and an even stronger business case for customers.”

“At a low wind site based on certain conditions, choosing a V126-3.3 MW instead of a V112-3.0 MW turbine boosts annual energy production by up to 19.5 per cent.” *

Proven technology
The new variants are based on further optimisation of the V112-3.0 MW nacelle in combination with a root extended 55m blade for the V117-3.3 MW and a structural shell blade for the V126-3.3 MW. The drive train functionality of the 3 MW platform is built from the same proven and tested technology as the V112-3.0 MW.

The first two prototypes of the V112-3.3 MW were installed in Denmark and have been operating successfully. The V117-3.3 MW and V126-3.3 MW prototypes will be installed in July and August 2013.

The new 3 MW turbines can be combined with Vestas’ world-class existing services, solutions and options, including our AOM 1000-5000 service packages.
Serial delivery for the pilot series of the new 3 MW variants will commence in 2013.
