The Scottish Government has today (Dec 18) launched its draft Offshore Wind Policy Statement and draft Sectoral Marine Plan for Offshore Wind Energy, setting out the areas of sea in which offshore renewable energy projects could be developed.

Fabrice Leveque, Senior Policy Manager at Scottish Renewables, said: “Today’s announcements set the terms for the development of Scotland’s offshore wind resource, which is one of the greatest in Europe.

“The Scottish Government is to be commended for its recognition that offshore wind presents a unique economic and environmental opportunity for Scotland – on one hand to revitalise some of the country’s most rural economies and remote communities, and on the other to provide the clean power needed to meet our climate targets. The sites which have been identified can do that and more in the decades to come.

“Six of the sites which have been announced today – a fifth of the seabed area identified as potentially suitable – will require additional environmental evaluation before they can be developed, and the Government’s commitment to a regular review of these plans as our understanding of the marine environment improves is therefore welcome.

“We look forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders to ensure that Scotland’s full offshore wind potential is unlocked and that this sector can deliver on its promise across the country.”
