- Installation will provide up to 200,000 kWh of renewable energy each year – drastically offsetting The Brewery Quarter’s regulated energy use in all common parts of the estate.
- SolarEdge technology chosen to maximise energy production and to provide the high level of safety required for the popular and busy venue.
29th October 2024 – The Brewery Quarter, a vibrant retail and leisure development in the heart of Cheltenham, has taken a significant step towards achieving its goal of net zero operation with the installation of an extensive 509-panel rooftop solar+storage system across five of its buildings. In its first year, the system is expected to generate up to 200,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy and offset the production of approximately 138 tonnes of carbon – equivalent to taking 30 cars off the roads for 12 months.
Located on Cheltenham High Street, The Brewery Quarter is home to a large number of retail outlets, restaurants, bars, and a variety of leisure facilities including a 14-screen cinema. The solar system will provide power for heating, lighting and air conditioning in the complex’s shared areas. This is expected to save in the region of £50,000 each year in reduced energy bills.
The solar system, which uses innovative SolarEdge technology to maximise energy production and ensure safety, was funded by leading rural insurer, NFU Mutual, and delivered through asset management company, Martin Commercial Properties, working in partnership with Your Eco, a leading local installer of solar power systems.
Bryony Plain-Jones, Asset Manager of NFU Mutual, says: “As the owner, we are thrilled to take this significant step towards improving sustainability. This investment in solar energy not only aligns with our values as a responsible property owner, but it also contributes to the long-term viability and resilience of the development. We are proud to support initiatives that prioritise environmental conservation and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the local community.”
Rob Howse, Operations Manager of Martin Commercial Properties, adds: “As a company, we are laser-focussed on reducing the environmental impact both of our own operation and those of our customers – a commitment that recently saw us achieve certification as a Carbon Neutral Business by Carbon Neutral Britain. By harnessing the power of solar energy, commercial operators can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to achieving a greener, more sustainable future for local communities. We believe The Brewery Quarter has set a positive example for other developments to follow.”
The rooftop system was designed and installed by Your Eco, which chose SolarEdge technology to maximise energy production and to provide the high level of safety required for such a popular and busy venue. In this system, SolarEdge Power Optimizers are attached to solar panels to mitigate the impact of soiling or shading which can reduce output in traditional, non-optimised systems. SolarEdge Power Optimizers also come with embedded advanced inbuilt safety features designed to reduce voltages to touch-safe levels in order to provide safe roof access during maintenance or in the unlikely event of an emergency.
The installation also includes 15 batteries which will be used to store excess energy produced during the day to provide power to The Brewery Quarter around the clock.
Nick Spicer, CEO of Your Eco, concludes: “Celebrating the successful adoption of a solar photovoltaic system at The Brewery Quarter in Cheltenham is a testament to the power of sustainable energy in action. Not only are we witnessing the tangible effectiveness of solar panels in reducing energy costs and carbon emissions, but we have also championed a positive environmental impact that will resonate with the local community. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope for developing areas, showcasing the enduring benefits of clean, renewable energy and the pivotal role it plays in nurturing thriving, sustainable communities.”
