Tech scale-ups Vind AI and Whiffle partner to redefine early-stage wind project development image

Partnership integrates Whiffle’s high-resolution atmospheric modelling into Vind AI’s digital platform for wind project assessment and design, exemplifying how advanced data and automation can now support developers to speed up the transition to a renewable energy system

● Developers can select optimal sites sooner, make clearer go/no-go calls, and reduce early-stage risk, thanks to earlier access to accurate, site-specific wind data.
● Faster scenario testing through Vind AI’s comparison workflows, combined with Whiffle’s simulations that run in hours instead of days, lets developers explore far more scenarios in less time.
● Integrating Whiffle’s modelling outputs into Vind AI removes the need for fragmented tools and manual work in the early phase, lowering overhead.

Oslo, Norway / Delft, Netherlands, December 9, 2025 — Vind AI and Whiffle today announce a partnership that gives wind developers worldwide access to better wind data with Whiffle’s high-accuracy atmospheric modelling now available in the Vind AI digital platform for wind farm assessment and design.

Whiffle’s atmospheric modelling is powered by large-eddy simulations (LES), which provide quick and reliable simulations of local wind conditions specific to a given wind farm site. By making Whiffle’s high-resolution wind data available directly in Vind AI’s platform, developers can work with more precise inputs early in the development process.

The new partnership strengthens the ability of data and digital tools to completely change traditional wind development processes, where high-resolution wind modelling has typically been introduced only later in development, partly because earlier approaches were costly and slow to run. Developers can now begin the design process with accurate, high-resolution data, enabling better screening of new project sites, more iterations of possible wind farm layouts, and faster investment decisions. Whiffle’s LES, accelerated by high-performance computing, now makes this level of detail accessible even before you have measurements.

“Tech now makes it possible for wind projects to be designed using accurate data from the start,” said Helene Bøhler, CEO and Co-founder at Vind AI. “Whiffle’s modelling brings a level of physical detail that developers have traditionally only been able to access later in the process. Integrating it directly into Vind AI reflects a broader shift toward a data-driven wind industry that makes full use of the latest technology. The industry is only getting started when it comes to leveraging the kind of computational power and resources that exist today, and we see that the developers we work with recognise that. They are as excited about the untapped potential as we are.”

Vind AI’s platform integrates more than 6000 data layers, advanced algorithms, and analysis and collaboration tools for wind projects in one place. It enables developers to make faster, smarter decisions when planning and designing wind projects.

“Key decisions happen long before measurements are in place, and that’s where uncertainty and cost risks are highest,” said Thijs van Winden, CTO at Whiffle. “By bringing LES directly into Vind AI, developers can evaluate sites with wind fields that reflect real atmospheric behaviour and carry that same modelling into the post-measurement phase for layout comparison. It gives teams much greater confidence when comparing scenarios, without the need for additional tools or modelling workflows.”

The next phase of the partnership will bring additional Whiffle data into Vind AI. This includes integrating Whiffle Atlas, Whiffle’s 20-year mesoscale wind-data service at 2 × 2 km resolution, to provide long-term wind climatology for wind resource assessment. Vind AI users will also be able to trigger turbine-specific LES time-series simulations for detailed energy-yield analysis, and access turbulence and flow-structure metrics to strengthen layout optimisation and AEP assessments.

The partnership with Whiffle is the latest addition to Vind AI’s collaborations with specialist data providers, which also include DTU (the Technical University of Denmark)’s WAsP predicted climate data, TGS 4C Offshore, and Norconsult’s Kjeller Vindteknikk’s local wind data.

About Whiffle data

Whiffle’s LES technology resolves the fine-scale atmospheric processes that shape wind-farm performance, and GPU acceleration reduces simulation runtimes to the point where LES can support repeated scenario and layout evaluations. Extensive global validation has shown a standard deviation of 0.4 m/s for Whiffle’s LES model, demonstrating reliable performance at the operational scale.

About Whiffle

Whiffle B.V. was founded in 2015, starting as a spin out of the Dutch Delft University of Technology. With its roots in science, the company continues to use cutting edge R&D to further develop Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models and its unique implementation on
high-performance computing systems. This resulted in the world’s first Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based operational weather model that produces highly accurate and ultra high resolution weather forecasts. Application areas of Whiffle’s model include short-term
wind and solar power forecasting, wind resource assessments and wind energy yield modelling.
