SolarEdge Partners with Axle Energy to Enable SolarEdge Home Battery Owners in Great Britain to Earn Up to £250 This Winter

  • Virtual power plant will maximise financial rewards for homeowners by enabling them to participate in multiple grid services at the same time

November 18, 2024SolarEdge Technologies, a global leader in smart energy technology, today announces the launch of its SolarEdge Flexible Grid Services program, in partnership with energy flexibility software provider, Axle Energy. Participating SolarEdge Home Battery owners in Great Britain will be able to earn up to £250* in cash this winter by allowing their stored energy to be used to support the UK grid during times of high demand, congestion or imbalance.

The Flexible Grid Services program is designed to maximise financial rewards for SolarEdge Home Battery owners by enabling participation in multiple grid services simultaneously. Leveraging SolarEdge’s advanced Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capabilities, the SolarEdge Home Battery can respond rapidly to various grid service demands, expanding the range of services available to customers. Batteries will be automatically controlled in near real-time, with no manual intervention required by homeowners, to support the grid.

Two services have been launched in the initial phase, which started in November 2024. The Demand Flexibility Service uses stored energy to supplement grid-supplied electricity during times of high demand on the national grid and is available to SolarEdge customers nationwide. Additionally, a Network Flexibility Service, which enables Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to load shift during times of local grid congestion, is also available to SolarEdge customers in parts of Great Britain where there is a requirement for this service by the DNO.

Plans for phase two of the programme aim to include  additional services such as Frequency Response, which could leverage participating customers’ stored energy to help stabilise grid frequency, as well as Wholesale Energy Market participation, in alignment with the latest electricity market reforms (P415).

Christelle Barnes, UK Country Manager at SolarEdge Technologies, comments: “We are delighted to partner with Axle Energy to help SolarEdge customers to unlock even more value from their home solar and storage systems. By participating in the Flexible Grid Services program, SolarEdge Home Battery owners can earn meaningful financial rewards for doing their bit to support the grid, making the return on investment period for their solar and storage system even more attractive. Importantly, the process is fully automated – meaning that once customers have signed up, they don’t need to do anything else.”

Karl Bach, Co-Founder of Axle Energy, comments: “Households with solar and storage systems have a crucial role to play in helping to decarbonise and support the grid. By participating in VPP programs such as SolarEdge Flexible Grid Services, they are helping to ensure a more sustainable and reliable electricity supply for everyone.”

“The VPP proposition is particularly compelling for SolarEdge Home battery customers,” Bach continues. “SolarEdge’s technology is designed to provide an extremely rapid response in grid services scenarios, increasing the number of services customers can be enrolled into. The more services they are able to participate in, the more money they can earn.”
