Carina® CarbonSecure™ delivers safety, sustainability, and substantial cost savings
24th November 2020, London, UK – Silixa has today announced the launch of Carina® CarbonSecure™, its distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based solution for continuous or on-demand monitoring of all stages of carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations to guard against carbon leakage or safety issues.
Glynn Williams, CEO at Silixa, says: “In the last few weeks alone we’ve seen Prime Minister Boris Johnson issue his ten-point climate plan here in the UK, and the victory of president-elect Joe Biden and his ambitious climate goals, both of which lean heavily on CCS. That’s the big picture – now it’s down to the market to solve the detailed technical challenges that can make it possible.
“For CCS to be successful from a climate perspective, you can’t just bury the carbon and forget about it. You need ongoing monitoring to make sure it stays put, you need detailed data throughout the initial assessment and injection phases, and you need to do all that while being sensitive to cost and safety considerations. Regulators and communities need that confidence to accept widespread adoption.”
Carina CarbonSecure is a reservoir management tool, developed based on extensive experience solving similar challenges in the oil and gas sector. As the fibre optic sensing array has no mechanical parts, it can be used without maintenance for decades, in line with mandated CCS monitoring periods. It can be deployed both on and offshore to:
- Assess the viability of geological formations for carbon storage during site characterisation.
- Monitor microseismic activity during the injection phase.
- Ensure well and storage integrity when CO2 is being injected.
- Provide 4D monitoring of the CO2 plume migration throughout the lifetime of the facility.
Williams adds: “Carina CarbonSecure is new in the market, but it utilises proven technology with a significant track record throughout the hydrocarbon value chain. We have leveraged the extensive experience, R&D investment, and technical expertise within Silixa to create a low-impact solution that can secure CO2 storage facilities – and demonstrate that security – while transforming the CCS cost model. We believe it is a vital step for creating a viable global infrastructure for essential CCS.”
