SCHOTT Solar and BASF receive Materialica Design + Technology Award 2011

• New material concept for roof-integrated PV earns Materialica Design + Technology Award

SCHOTT Solar and BASF were honored with the Materialica Design + Technology Award 2011 yesterday in the “Product” category. The award recognizes a new material concept for roof-integrated photovoltaics (PV) that consists of a specially developed multifunctional tray made from the plastic Ultramid® B High Speed from BASF and a frameless double glass module from SCHOTT Solar. The design study specifically targets larger roofs and is extremely easy to install.

Both companies had already introduced a design study this past summer that offers a completely new approach to roof-integrated PV. The substructure that replaces the roof membrane consists of a synthetic material that has been reinforced with glass fibers (BASF Ultramid® B High Speed). The tray made of this synthetic material is mounted to the substructure of the roof at four fastening points. The next step calls for the durable double glass module to be pushed into the sealing system of the tray, which it fits into just perfectly, and then affixing it with a click system. This reduces the number of work steps involved in installing solar systems quite considerably. The PV module used here from the SCHOTT PROTECT series is based on proven double glass technology that offers reliable protection against rain, hail and other environmental influences.

The engineering plastic Ultramid® B High Speed from BASF is capable of handling long flow distances and can be used to produce thin walled parts in a fail-safe way. Thereby it is possible to manufacture the very large tray using glass fiber-reinforced polyamide in an injection molding process. In addition the properties of this special polyamide combine high strength with very good resistance to weathering and UV radiation. Furthermore, the Ultramid® B High Speed qualifies for the fire protection class B2 for building and construction.

About the MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award

Every year, the Materialica Design + Technology Award goes to products from all industries that put both new and familiar materials to use in an innovative way. The categories include Material, Product, Surface & Technology and CO2 Efficiency. The assessment criteria include degree of innovation, design quality, technological aspects, processing, material selection, environmental compatibility, functionality, practical value, safety, brand value/branding, in addition to the feasibility of conceptual contributions. The award show takes place at the occasion of the trade fair Materialica, an international trade exhibition of material applications, surfaces and product engineering that will be held in Munich from October 18 – 20, 2011.

The new roof-integrated photovoltaic (PV) concept based on the SCHOTT ADVANCE Series consists of only two parts: a specially developed multi-function pan made from the BASF resin Ultramid® B High Speed and a frameless double-glazed module. It is designed for large roof areas on industrial and agricultural buildings and is especially lightweight and easy to install.

About SCHOTT Solar

SCHOTT Solar, with its high-quality products, enables the potential of the sun as a nearly inexhaustible source of energy to be utilized. And it’s for exactly that reason that SCHOTT Solar produces important components for photovoltaic applications and solar energy plants. In the photovoltaic industry, the company is one of the few integrated manufacturers of crystalline silicon wafers, cells and modules. In thin-film technology, SCHOTT Solar also describes itself as an advanced supplier due to having over twenty years of experience. And in the production of receivers for solar power plants, SCHOTT Solar sees itself as a market and technology leader. The receivers are key components in large-scale power plants that generate electricity from solar energy centrally on the basis of parabolic trough technology and are able to supply entire cities with power. SCHOTT Solar has production facilities in Germany, the Czech Republic, the USA and Spain. The innovative power and technological competence of the company date back to the late 1950s. SCHOTT Solar is a wholly owned subsidiary of the international SCHOTT technology group. SCHOTT develops special materials, components and systems for the household appliance, pharmaceutical, solar energy, electronics, optical and automotive industries. With around 17,500 employees, the SCHOTT Group generated a worldwide turnover of about 2.9 billion euros in fiscal year 2009/2010.
