Power Roll partners with leading Japanese energy company on solar film market development

Power Roll, a developer of ultra-low-cost and lightweight flexible solar film has announced a strategic partnership with one of Japan’s leading energy companies.

The partnership sets out a range of research and development activities to establish the market potential and use cases for solar film in Japan. Flexible and lightweight solar film will expand the market for solar energy, generating new opportunities across a broad range of applications.

A successful partnership will see the energy company become a licensee of Power Roll’s technology with the rights to develop, manufacture and sell its solar film in Japan.

“This major Japanese energy company is already demonstrating strong leadership in the effort to achieve net zero carbon, and we’re delighted to partner with such an innovative organisation to help them deliver on those goals,” said Neil Spann, chief executive officer, Power Roll.

The energy company’s vision embodies a target to expand its renewable power generation, aiming to reach a significant renewable power source transaction volume in Japan and internationally by 2030.

Power Roll’s solar film is on track to deliver the lowest cost of electricity for any solar technology, is 25 times lighter than silicon PV and has a carbon footprint that is 20 times lower. Power Roll’s technology simplifies manufacturing by using high-speed roll-to-roll production processes, which eliminates many costly process steps typical of other solar photovoltaic technologies.

Power Roll recently announced that it had closed £5.8m of investment over two funding rounds.

About Power Roll

Power Roll, headquartered in Sunderland, has developed a unique, flexible, lightweight solar film capable of producing ultra-low-cost green electricity that is up to 20 times cheaper to make than existing flexible PV. By applying different coatings to its versatile microgroove design, Power Roll can also use the film for energy storage and to manufacture capacitors. Power Roll’s microgroove film is suitable for non-load-bearing rooftops, building integration, agri-voltaics, transport, portable applications, off-grid projects and IoT sensors.
