Phoenix Solar AG, a leading international photovoltaic system integrator listed on the TecDAX, has been building Germany’s largest photovoltaic power plant on a carport in Berlin over the last weeks. Moreover, this is currently Berlin’s largest photovoltaic power plant. The carport, the roof of which is covered with solar modules, is located on property belonging to Police Department 2 in Berlin Spandau and gives shelter to more than 500 vehicles against sun and rain. The solar power plant with a peak output of 998 kilowatts generates environmentally compatible electricity for around 250 four-person households.
The Phoenix Solar AG construction team installed around 3,700 crystalline solar modules arrayed in eight double rows at an angle of 18 degrees on the carport which is situated on a parking lot of 7,200 square metres. The electrical connection is ensured through mini central inverters and a transformer as well as a transfer station with a switching system connected to the 10 kV medium voltage grid operated by Vattenfall, the local energy utility company. The power plant is due to be connected to the grid before Christmas.
“We are very pleased to have been awarded the contract for this flagship project. We view photovoltaic systems on carports as an important future market segment. This is where we can apply the multi-functionality of photovoltaics and deliver value added to the customer which goes beyond the pure generating of electricity”, commented Ulrich Reidenbach, Chief Sales Officer of Phoenix Solar AG.
Bumiller Neue Energien GmbH, a company headquartered in Berlin, was responsible for the development and coordination of the carport project. The company concentrates on the conception and realisation of solar projects. “This project has enabled us to demonstrate that inner-city planning can reach new dimensions through creativity and open-mindedness”, said Henrik Bumiller, Managing Director of Bumiller Neue Energien GmbH.
Project planning was carried out by MW Solar Consulting GmbH, and the financing and financial planning by MW Beratung who advised the investors of the solar power plant. “What our customers are looking for in times of financial unrest is a secure investment which makes sense – here the combination of investing in photovoltaics and personal financial planning is an ideal solution which provides an attractive return”, commented Markus Wahle, owner of MW Beratung.
The property of the Police Academy in Spandau is managed by BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH (BIM). As the contractual partner of MW Solar Consulting GmbH it represents the State of Berlin which is the owner. “The solar power plant saves 750 t CO2 a year and is another important step in achieving our climate protection goal of lowering the CO2 emission of buildings managed by BIM by 21 percent by 2015”, stated BIM Managing Director Sven Lemiss.

Project planning, financing and financial planning Independence in investment planning means thinking integratively and not in terms of revenue. In times of financial unrest an investment in photovoltaics is a worthwhile opportunity.
