Minister-President Günther opens HUSUM Wind

Trade fair sets signal for a fresh start: Wind industry prepared for challenges in core market / new technologies, innovative strength and political initiative are the keys to the turnaround

Husum, 10 September 2019. Over four days, almost 600 domestic and foreign exhibitors will be showcasing technical innovations and new products at the trade fair and industry platform, which has now been accompanying developments in the German onshore and offshore wind industry for three decades. In view of the difficult conditions in the core market at this time, under the motto “We take wind a step further”, there will be a particular focus at the trade fair on new technologies for solving the challenges currently facing the wind industry, such as making the energy system more flexible, digitalising it and promoting its societal acceptance.

In the early morning, HUSUM Wind was opened by Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister-President Daniel Günther. “HUSUM Wind is the showcase for state-of-the-art technology in the entire field of renewable energy generation, storage and transport. We see renewable energies as an opportunity for our economy. This is why we want to generate added value in the state and develop new innovative technologies,” said the Minister-President.

The subsequent discussion on the future potential of the wind industry was attended by representatives of associations and businesses as well as Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister for Energy Transition, Jan-Philipp Albrecht. The entire state cabinet met at HUSUM Wind at noon and thus made a positive commitment to the importance of wind energy for Schleswig-Holstein.

This year’s HUSUM Wind, under the patronage of the Federal Minister of Economics and Energy, Peter Altmaier, takes place in what are challenging times for the industry.

In this situation he expects “a signal of a fresh start from the fair”, said Arne Petersen, Managing Director of Messe Husum & Congress. The societal demand for more climate protection and less CO2 emissions will strengthen renewable energies. The employment of green energy, most of which is generated by wind power, has already led to a cut of 177.8 tons of greenhouse gases annually in Germany. “Here at the trade fair it will be possible to see up close what the contribution made by wind energy can look like in the future. There are opportunities in intelligent technologies with which wind turbines can be operated efficiently and in a location-appropriate manner. There are also opportunities to be had in technical innovations that reduce costs and ensure competitiveness. Likewise, there are opportunities in storage technologies and Power-to-X, with which it will be possible to better distribute and utilise wind power.”
