Jan De Nul Group wins the annual IADC Safety Award, presented during the Annual General Meeting of the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) in Marseille, France. Jan De Nul Group is being honoured for its ‘transport of pipeline optimization’ initiative on its logistic hubs in Zelzate (Belgium) and worldwide. The award was presented by Frank Verhoeven, president of IADC to Maarten Tronckoe, Transport Supervisor at Jan De Nul Group, initiator and inspirer of the awarded initiative.
Jan De Nul Group is known for its in-house expertise and engineering skills. “When executing a job, we always imagine how to better plan our work and we discuss together how we can improve such plans,” explains Christophe Leroy, QHSSE Manager at Jan De Nul Group. “Together we think of new and improved methods. And if needed, our engineers design it and our in-house workshop builds it. The optimized working process, for which we have been rewarded today, was developed, designed and tested by our own colleagues in the field. The team combined new ideas with various techniques available on the market which resulted in an overall safer process to handle and transport pipelines.”
Transport of pipelines optimization I The improved working method
Jan De Nul Group was chosen as a winner by the Safety Committee of IADC out of thirteen nominations submitted by all the major players in the dredging industry. Handling and transportation of pipelines of various sizes and diameters under different circumstances has been a reoccurring topic in the dredging industry.
Jan De Nul Group optimized and enhanced the handling and transport of dredging pipes by means of three techniques: the use of DHATEC cradles, modular spreader
sand C-pipe hooks in combination with soft slings. The combination of all three (as shown on attached picture) improves the efficiency of the job, the safety during the handling and transport, as well as the safety and the ergonomics of the riggers. This optimized process complies with the NBN EN 12195 standard regarding load security.
The DHATEC cradles are mounted on the truck platform, adjustable to the pipeline diameter. The load on the truck is also secured with lashing straps. The C-pipe hooks are attached to a soft sling which makes it safer and ergonomically easier for the rigger to handle. And thanks to the use of the spreader beam, the soft slings with attached C-pipe hooks are positioned optimally by using taglines so that the riggers can easily attach the load from the ground.
This new working process was engineered and tested with different configurations. The best solution is the process which now gained recognition by winning the IADC award. “This is a nice example of our Imagine-Think-Act programme. The new working method is currently being implemented worldwide on our workshops and logistic hubs,” concludes Leroy.
IADC Safety Award
IADC presents its Safety Award each year during the IADC Annual General Meeting in September. The IADC Safety Award is intended to encourage the development of safety skills on the job and to reward people and companies active in the dredging industry demonstrating diligence in safety awareness in the performance of their profession.
