Ingeteam at EWEA Offshore 2013: Electrical equipment to optimise wind turbine competitiveness

Ingeteam will exhibit at EWEA Offshore 2013, the world’s largest offshore wind energy conference and exhibition that will take place in Frankfurt, Germany from 19-21 November.

Offshore wind is one of the fastest growing maritime sectors. Today, 5,538 MW of offshore wind power has been installed globally, representing about 2% of total installed wind power capacity. More than 90% of it is installed in Europe, making the region by far the world leader in offshore wind. A total of 40 GW could be installed by 2020 worldwide, with three quarters of this in Europe, meeting 4% of European electricity demand.

At the event, Ingeteam will be showcasing its electrical equipment for wind turbines up to 10 MW. The display at Stand 31D70 in Hall 3.1 will include a power converter with key components such as a Power Stack, a Basic Power Module (BPM) and control electronics.

The components are part of the new Low and Medium Voltage converter families which are based on the semiconductor parallelization for certain Power values (especially for low voltage) and on the smart parallelization of several Conversion Lines (especially for medium voltage). Both allow a complete redundant system solution (Power System, Power Supply, CCU and others). At the same time, the converter families are completely modular and offer flexible and scalable solutions for each project and different application requirements. With output powers ranging from 3 MW to 10 MW, the medium voltage converters are highly suitable for the offshore market.

In order to achieve high reliability products, important aspects have been taken into account during the design process, such as easy and fast maintenance, High Power Density (kW/m3) and compatibility, considering at least 2 suppliers for each main component. Fast and easy definition of the Power Stack has been achieved through low package IGBTs for low voltage components and high package IGBT modules for medium voltage components. Likewise, the medium voltage products are highly flexible by offering several Power Stack options based on number of BPMs per cabinet. Additionally, several Conversion Lines can be used for power increase for the whole converter solution.

Control electronics will also be shown. The Converter Control Unit (CCU) is a programmable electronic device with different analog/digital outputs and input and communication channels. It manages and controls the frequency converter’s operation by regulating the power flow between the generator and the grid.

Ingeteam has 18 years of experience in the wind industry and is committed to innovation and development of full in-house technology. In 2012, R&D expenditure accounted for 10% of net sales. To date, the company has supplied 24 GW of installed wind power capacity worldwide, confirming its position as a global market leader in wind turbine electrical conversion equipment.

The stand will also host Indar Electric, an Ingeteam company dedicated to the design and manufacturing of generators since 1940.
