Madrid/Lisbon, 03 February 2025: Amazon and Iberdrola, one of the world’s largest clean energy companies, have added an additional 476 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy PPAs (power purchase agreements) to their global renewable energy partnership, expanding its presence into five countries.
The new power purchase agreements include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the largest wind farm in Portugal, scheduled to begin construction in early 2025. The partnership also expanded into Spain, with two utility scale PPAs agreed for a total 257 MW of solar and wind energy. The three projects are equivalent to 1,093 GWh of carbon- free electricity per year, enough to power the equivalent of around 300,000 homes per year.
Iberdrola and Amazon have extended their strategic partnership, originally signed in 2022 for renewable energy PPAs and cloud services, with the new agreement enabling both parties to collaborate on additional projects in existing and new markets. In total, Amazon has now contracted more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide over the lifetime of all signed PPA agreements.
In August 2024, Iberdrola selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, as part of their global collaboration. Utilising AWS’s AI capabilities, Iberdrola’s distribution business is now innovating to improve the grid connection process for new points of supply. Iberdrola’s Renewables business is optimizing its windfarm design process by leveraging the compute power of the AWS Cloud to simulate wake effects and further improve the layout of wind turbines.
Iberdrola is also using Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) High Performance Computing (HPC) to improve weather forecasting simulations performance across its 400 windfarms globally. Other innovative initiatives planned for 2025 include building a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform on AWS, with services like Amazon WorkSpaces, and deploying an AWS Landing Zone to support the migration of critical workloads to the AWS Region in Spain.
In detail, the new PPA agreements include:
- 219 MW has been contracted by Amazon at the Tâmega Wind Complex. It is the largest green hybridisation project in the country, designed to make efficient use of the grid connection point already built at the Tâmega hydroelectric complex. With a total investment by Iberdrola of around €350 million, the 274 MW project will power the equivalent consumption of 128,000 households per year and create over 700 jobs at the peak of construction.
- Amazon will purchase 212 MW capacity at the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, in Western Spain. In total, the project will produce clean energy to supply the equivalent of 150,000 homes per year. With an investment of close to €200 million by Iberdrola, more than 800 jobs will be supported during peak construction periods. As part of the project, Iberdrola has made a commitment to Ciudad Rodrigo municipality to support restoration of the Plaza Amayuelas town square to make it once again a space for the whole community to enjoy.
- Additionally, the output from 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos, will be purchased. With an installed capacity of 49.5 MW, capable of supplying the equivalent of 48,000 households, the project is made up of eleven wind turbines, with a height of 107.5 metres and a rotor diameter of 145 metres. During peak construction the project will support 145 jobs, around 40% will be drawn from local contractors.
The commitment to securing renewable energy PPAs helps Amazon match the electricity consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy, as part of its goal reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. With more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, Amazon is the world’s (and Spain’s) largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy according to Bloomberg NEF for the fifth year running.
Iberdrola has been announced as the top seller of PPAs in Europe for a second consecutive year, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report.
