Europe, World n°1 in Renewables: European SmartGrids and Photovoltaic Platforms to address challenges of Repowering Europe

– Repowering Europe: joint conference about Smartgrids & Photovoltaics
– Two-day Conference to address challenges how to adapt grids to have Europe become World n°1 in Renewables.
– More than 300 stakeholders are expected to attend this event of reference for the Smartgrids and Photovoltaic communities in Europe

The European Technology Platform on SmartGrids (ETP SG) and the European Technology and Innovation Platform Photovoltaics (ETIP PV) are jointly organising the conference: “Repowering Europe” on 18 and 19 May in Brussels. This two-day event will attract more than 300 participants all together.

Most of Europe’s power system was built in the middle of the last century on the basis of centralised generation and passive distribution. This robust infrastructure has served us well even in the first waves of distributed power generation. Now Europe’s ambition to decarbonise its energy supply and to be world number one in renewables requires a step change in the way we adapt and operate our grids.

Photovoltaics is the generation technology most widely connected to distribution networks. As such it is at the forefront of both the challenges and opportunities in transforming the grid. This is why the two European Technology and Innovation Platforms, Photovoltaics and SmartGrids, are teaming up this year to address in their annual events the state of the art and the technical and strategic challenges ahead to achieve a sustainable repowering of Europe facilitated by a smart, adaptive and integrated grid.

The conference is built around two days, the main outline of these two joint conferences are:

Day 1: ETIP PV conference: ‘Photovoltaics: centre-stage in the power system’
Day 2: ETP SG General Assembly leading: ‘Smart, adaptive & integrated grid for facilitating the sustainable repowering’

Companies active in Photovoltaics and SmartGrids from across Europe as well as research centres and academia will take part to the event.

Both platforms began their work in 2005 with the aim of promoting European strategy for smart electricity networks and photovoltaics respectively. After this first phase the views of the members sectors of the platform were consolidated and then research priorities and the deployment of network technologies were established via Research Agendas.

The Repowering Europe Conference is jointly organised by ZABALA Innovation Consulting and WIP – Renewable Energies, with the support of the European Commission Joint Research Centre, Bacher Energie, Derlab, EUREC, KU Leuven, Solar Power Europe.
