Eemshaven/Hamburg, August 29th, 2024 – Buss Terminal Eemshaven successfully completed the handling and load-out of monopiles and transition pieces for the EnBW offshore wind farm “He Dreiht”, contracted by Heerema Marine Contractors. Spanning from January until August 2024 this project marks a significant achievement for our team and the broader renewable energy sector.
He Dreiht, meaning “He turns” is a pioneering project that will feature 64 wind turbines and is going to have an installed capacity of 960 MW. Situated approximately 90 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum and 110 kilometers west of Helgoland, the wind farm will be a benchmark of the European energy transition and will be able to supply 1.1 million households with renewable energy when it’s connected to the grid at the end of 2025.
Serving as Base Port for He Dreiht, Buss Terminal Eemshaven (BTE) played a key role in the project’s success. BTE was the center for unloading massive monopiles, with a diameter of 9,2 meters, lengths of up to seventy-one meters and a massive weight up to 1.350 tons. The 35-metre-high transition pieces bring 640 tons to the scales. The terminal also managed the storage of these components, and their subsequent loading onto seagoing barges for installation. Beyond the terminal logistics in Eemshaven, the engineering and project management aspects associated with the logistics scope of this project, were covered by the Team of Buss Offshore Solutions in Hamburg.
Collaboration and state-of -the-art equipment
“A special mention and thanks goes to Buss’ partner Sarens, with whom we have enjoyed an outstanding and strong partnership throughout the duration of the project.” says Haaye Ravensbergen, Operations Manager at Buss Terminal Eemshaven.
Sarens provided an impressive line-up of flexible and independent services and solutions in completing the challenging project for the Transition Piece manufacturer Smulders, the Mono Pile manufacturer Steelwind and the Transport & Installation party Heerema. The equipment comprised three cranes of the highest capacity class (CC8800/1, CC9800 and LR12500-1) lined up at BTE’s quay side. Less visible, but no less important, were over 100 SPMT axle lines that transported the components with precision and care.
Team spirit drives success
“The remarkable success of this project roots in the team spirit at Buss Terminal Eemshaven,” commented Haaye Ravensbergen. “On site, there was a strong hands-on mentality that went far beyond the contractually defined areas of responsibility. It did not matter which company the individual team members and employees on site belonged to. Everyone worked hand in hand to achieve the common goal.”
For Buss Ports, this major project is another milestone in positioning its expertise in port logistics and demonstrating the capabilities of the 300,000 m² heavy lift terminal BTE with its state-of-the-art infrastructure. The successful implementation of the project will further contribute to Europe’s ambitious journey towards a sustainable future.
About Buss Ports
Buss Ports unites all port activities of the Buss Group, which was founded in 1920. It all began more than 100 years ago with the founding of Gerd Buss Stauerei. The company quickly made a name for itself with the loading and unloading of ships and within a few years became one of the largest stevedoring companies in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. At its peak, Buss operated four transshipment terminals here.
Today, Buss Ports is a reliable partner offering comprehensive solutions for the energy sector and industry. The portfolio includes a broad spectrum ranging from classic port logistics and stevedoring to customized project logistics. Buss Ports operates four terminals either independently or in partnerships. There are also other service companies.
In the offshore wind logistics sector, Buss Ports has been successfully operating the Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands since 2011. Buss Ports has established itself as the first port of call in the market for harbour logistics for large offshore wind projects. The team of logistics experts and engineers at Buss Offshore Solutions in Hamburg creates customized and individual logistics solutions for the handling, transport, storage and pre-installation of offshore wind components.
