Avanti in the World’s Largest Wind Turbine

The world’s largest wind turbine is now in operation at the Danish National Test Center in Oesterild in Thy near the coast in the north-western part of Denmark.
Vestas V-164 has a 140 metre high tower. Each blade measures 80 metres and weighs 35 tons. The nacelle alone is 8 metres high and weighs 390 tons. The steel tower is produced at Bladt Industries in Aalborg, Denmark, and the wings are manufactured at Vestas’ factory on the Isle of Wight, off England’s south coast. The nacelle is produced at Vestas’ offshore test center in Lindoe, Denmark – and all of it is transported to the north-western part of Jutland, Denmark, where the prototype was assembled and installed.

Vestas V-164 is designed for offshore installation, but the prototype is established in the Danish test center. Here, potential customers from around the world also have the opportunity to see the giant in operation.

They will also have the opportunity to see and test the tower’s service lift. Avanti Wind Systems has developed a new version of Avanti’s Dolphin Service Lift which is installed in the large wind turbine tower. The newly developed Dolphin has, among other new constructions, an increased lifting capacity. The lift was installed a few weeks ago and was immediately after installation approved by a third party as required by Danish law.

Vestas has designed the V-164 to require as little maintenance as possible and necessary servicing can be done safely, quickly and cost effectively.

“We are very proud that Vestas has chosen a service lift from Avanti to the 140 metre high tower”, says General Manager Michael Hemicke, Avanti Wind Systems.
