Pakistan is a promising new market for solar projects
Berlin/Germany, March 24, 2015 – aleo solar is working with the energy provider GreenIndusTree to help supply homes and companies in Pakistan with decentralized, environmentally-friendly electricity. The photovoltaics manufacturer is supplying GreenIndusTree with 278 solar modules for the start of the project, which will produce clean electricity for 18 homes. Until now, diesel generators were often used during the power cuts, which can last for up to 14 hours every day. But operating these generators results in high fuel costs and CO2 emissions. The up-and-coming country is suffering from a major energy shortage and supply does not even come close to meeting demand. The feed-in tariff for solar and wind energy recently announced in Pakistan has given hope for a better power supply in the future.
“Power cuts are a daily occurrence in Pakistan, even in major cities – and both industry and private homes are suffering as a result. The country has a population of around 200 million and is one of the up-and-coming emerging markets in Asia, but the demand for energy cannot be met. The energy requirements currently total 27 gigawatts, while only 15 gigawatts of electricity are actually produced. The situation has been getting worse for many years”, reports Dr. Kaiser Chaudhary, Managing Director at GreenIndusTree. “We therefore want to provide homes and companies with solar storage systems as a quick and independent power supply. We have selected high-quality German brand products for this task.” GreenIndusTree has combined these products to create systems, which can withstand the extreme weather conditions in Pakistan with up to 45 degrees. “We chose aleo as our exclusive solar module supplier and partner due to the high-quality, high-performance modules supplied by the company. The high quality of the components, together with the service from GreenIndusTree, ensure that the systems continue to deliver optimal performance for years to come”, continues Dr. Chaudhary.
The 18 solar power systems with a total output of around 100 kilowatt peak will be installed from April this year in Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan, on the border with northern India. aleo modules type S18 and aleo high-performance modules S19 will be used, which achieve an efficiency of around 18 percent. The high efficiency and the extremely stable high energy yields are achieved through the combination of selected components and solar cells with the latest technology. GreenIndusTree builds the systems complete with battery storage to help the homes achieve independence from power cuts and the availability of diesel. The solar storage systems have a capacity of 5 to 10 kilowatt hours.

NEPRA, the electricity regulatory authority in Pakistan, has recently begun promoting the feed-in of solar power from large plants. In the north of the country, every kilowatt hour fed in will be reimbursed with around 22 Pakistani Rupees for 10 years, which corresponds to around 15 Cent. After this time, system operators will receive 9 Rupees (6 Cent) for 15 years. In the south, the feed-in tariff will be 21 Rupees (14.6 Cent), followed by 8.7 Rupees (6 Cent) per kilowatt hour. A feed-in tariff has also already been decided on for private homes and the figures will be announced over the next few weeks.
