ABB selected to upgrade irrigation pumping stations at Serres in Greece

For improved energy performance at pumping stations and better flow of water within the irrigation network, ABB’s host of solutions can help Greek farmers.

Water is critical to industrial, household and agricultural activities. The Serres area, in Northern Greece, known for its architecture, is also an agricultural and cotton farming base. The Land Improvement Organization of Psychiko-Pethelino (TOEB), through a public tender performed by the Municipality of Emmanouil Pappas, selected ABB to upgrade the irrigation pumping stations in the area to optimize the energy used for the water irrigation infrastructure, which acts as the backbone of local farming activities.

“We have seen ABB’s work in the irrigation and wider water industry, which encouraged us to use ABB’s automation and digital solutions for our pumping stations and modernize the entire irrigation infrastructure.” said Chr. Mitrakas, Head of Technical Department at Emmanuel Pappas municipality.

With decades of experience supporting the water and irrigation industry worldwide, ABB is one the leading providers of automation and digital solutions, enabling improved performance while driving energy efficiency.

“Winning this project has assured us of the trust our customers have in us.” said Michalis Kanellopoulos, Sales Manager ABB Energy Industries in Greece. “Our solutions provide a holistic approach to maintaining a higher level of operational excellence. The success of this project enhances ABB’s position in the water and irrigation infrastructural solutions industry.”

“Our solutions will help establish a robust irrigation system with the best energy performance that will support the essential work performed by the local farmers.” said John Kokkotos, Local Division Manager ABB Energy Industries in Greece.

Improved irrigation infrastructures

ABB received the contract from TOEB Psychiko-Pethelino in March 2024 and has been working with the local public company to understand the irrigation system gaps in the pumping stations. As part of the project, ABB will install a distributed control system, electromagnetic flowmeters, programmable logic controllers and variable speed drives, to secure an energy-efficient flow of water.

By installing ABB’s intelligent data-driven digital solutions and systems, TOEB Psychiko-Pethelino aims to improve the irrigation and water infrastructure leading to greater energy efficiency and reduced energy consumption.

“Our solutions aim to help achieve a reduction of almost 15 percent in energy consumption once the project has been completed.” said Michalis Kanellopoulos, Sales Manager Energy Industries ABB Greece.

Additionally, ABB will provide remote control capabilities to the upgraded pumping stations, enabling operators to monitor operations and troubleshoot whenever any issue arises.
