The Renewable Energy Project of the Year Award is new for 2009 and will focus on the development or improvement of large scale renewable energy projects and initiatives that are supporting the development of the renewable energy industry. The NEMEX Renewables Innovation Award, sponsored by British Gas Business, will recognise the individual or organisation that has shown the most innovative approach towards the installation of small scale, embedded renewable energy systems.

The awards, which are open to all, focus on celebrating excellence and innovation. Donna Bushell, event director, comments: “The importance of renewables in combating climate change and ensuring energy security is unrivalled. As the leading UK event for excellence and innovation in the environment, water, land, energy and sustainability sectors, it is only right that this rapidly growing industry is rewarded at Sustainabilitylive!”

Northern Ireland Electricity won the 2008 NEMEX Renewables Innovation Award for its Northern Ireland Switched on Schools programme. Gwyneth Scott, energy services project co-ordinator, said: “Winning the award was the ultimate reward for a project well done. Everyone involved, from the schools to the funding partners, are delighted to have been involved in such a successful project. Since winning we have noticed a real difference in awareness of our sustainable energy activities across Northern Ireland.”

The Energy and Environment Awards will be showcased and presented during Sustainabilitylive!, the UK’s largest event for excellence and innovation in the environment, water, land, energy and sustainability sectors. The awards presentation will take place during a celebration dinner on the evening of Tuesday 19 May, 2009 at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham.
