Hyundai Heavy Industries Selects Intergraph® SmartPlant® 3D

Plant division of world’s largest shipbuilder uses next-generation 3D engineering design technology to boost productivity of power plant projects

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 12, 2013 – The Industrial Plant & Engineering division of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has selected Intergraph® SmartPlant® 3D and other SmartPlant Enterprise solutions to establish an integrated engineering environment for its power plant projects.

HHI’s headquarters is in Korea, and its Industrial Plant & Engineering division has been a longtime user of Intergraph solutions. To keep up with a highly competitive power industry, the division needed to evolve and update its engineering systems to leverage next-generation technology. HHI chose SmartPlant 3D, the most advanced plant design solution, along with other SmartPlant Enterprise solutions, including SmartPlant Review, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartSketch® and CAESAR II®. SmartPlant Enterprise’s automation capabilities will enable HHI’s plant division to establish an intelligent engineering system and generate high-quality deliverables for improved productivity and project management, in spite of an aging work force and new, less experienced resources.

“To maintain our position as the world’s leading heavy industries company, it was critical that we continuously innovate and adopt the latest technology,” said Junghag Mun, general manager of the 3D design department at HHI’s Industrial Plant & Engineering division. “We will use SmartPlant 3D, Intergraph’s industry-leading 3D plant design solution, and the integrated SmartPlant Enterprise portfolio to support the engineering and construction of our industrial plant projects, particularly for the power industry. We are confident SmartPlant Enterprise will continue to deliver great value to HHI, enabling us to improve safety, quality and productivity of our projects.”

Gerhard Sallinger, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine president, said, “Intergraph is recognized as the top provider of engineering design solutions in the global power industry, with SmartPlant 3D offering powerful rules and relationships that automate repetitive tasks, enforce design standards, ensure design integrity and protect design consistency. The comprehensive SmartPlant Enterprise suite will provide HHI with a business process integration platform to support regulatory compliance for enhanced plant reliability. Our ongoing partnership with one of the world’s biggest engineering companies is validation of our global leadership position and SmartPlant Enterprise’s ability to meet the needs of even the most large-scale and complex projects.”

SmartPlant 3D is the world’s first and only next-generation 3D plant design solution, employing a breakthrough engineering approach that is focused on rules, relationships and automation. It is the most advanced and productive 3D plant design solution that effective enables optimized design to increase safety, quality and productivity, while shortening project schedules. Companies using SmartPlant 3D typically report a 30 percent improvement in overall engineering design productivity.

The ARC Advisory Group, a leading industry analyst firm, ranked Intergraph as the No. 1 overall worldwide provider of engineering design solutions for industry according to its “Engineering Design Tools for Industry and Infrastructure Worldwide Outlook Market Analysis and Forecast Through 2016.”
