Standing on the shoulders of giants

Although just over a year old, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is already a major player in the wind industry. The company’s parent companies are two of the global leaders in wind power and offshore ventures, while its 8MW turbine is a potential game-changer. We spoke to the company’s Matt Whitby…

PES: Welcome to PES. Would you like to introduce the company and explain a little about how you serve the wind industry?
Matt Whitby:
MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a joint venture between Vestas Wind Systems A/S 50% and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) 50%. The company’s sole focus is to design, manufacture, install and service wind turbines for the offshore wind industry.
The company aims to drive down the cost of energy from offshore wind parks by driving capital and operating savings, and increasing output of wind turbines by bringing the best technology to the market. The company is founded on collaboration, and creating powerful partnerships with key stakeholders will be the cornerstone of its business model.

PES: The company is actually a combination of two organisations. How does this work in practice and how does it benefit your overall goals?
MW:
MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has a strong mandate to achieve our goals and the operation of the company is fully supported by both our parent companies.
