Wind2 strengthens its Lidar-first measurement strategy with ZX 300e and ZX Measurement Services
Published in: Wind, Press Releases
ZX Measurement Services is supporting independently owned Welsh renewable energy developer Wind2 with a flexible Lidar-first approach to wind measurement campaigns, combining ZX Lidars latest wind Lidar technology with deployment, field services and reliable power solutions to support projects across its development portfolio.
Wind2, a family-owned large to medium scale renewable energy developer, has been using remote sensing technology for a number of years. Having previously operated a fleet of SoDAR systems, the company invested in a ZX 300 wind Lidar in June 2025 before upgrading to the latest ZX 300e through ZX Lidars Turn Me On programme, enabling remote activation of the enhanced capabilities of the latest 'e' mode.
Alongside the technology, ZX Measurement Services provides deployment, field services and the power supply unit, supporting Wind2's wind measurement campaigns from installation through to ongoing operation.
As turbine hub heights continue to increase, Wind2 has adopted a Lidar-first approach on selected projects, enabling accurate wind measurements to be collected quickly during the early stages of development. Early deployment allows site-specific measurement data to be gathered sooner, supporting wind resource assessments and builds confidence in development decisions.
On a current campaign, the performance-verified ZX 300e is measuring wind resource up to 250 metres, covering the full rotor swept area of modern large-rotor turbines. This provides measured shear data at heights well above those of a conventional meteorological mast, along with turbulence data.
Ian Curry, Technical Director, Wind2, said: "We've always taken the view that good development decisions start with good resource data. As turbine hub heights continue to increase, a growing proportion of the rotor lies above the reach of conventional meteorological masts, and Lidar has become an important part of our measurement strategy. The ability to deploy quickly, measure across the full rotor swept area and start collecting site-specific data early in a project allows the shear profile to be measured rather than modelled, increasing our confidence in the primary energy resource at an early stage of development."
Measurement strategies continue to be determined on a project-by-project basis, depending on site characteristics, wind resource assessment requirements and wind turbine OEM acceptance. While meteorological masts remain appropriate for some projects, Wind2 sees increasing opportunities to adopt standalone wind Lidar where project requirements allow.
Carlos Sanchez, Senior Renewable Energy Design Engineer, Wind 2 added: "There isn't a single measurement solution for every project. The appropriate approach depends on the site, the wind resource assessment requirements and ultimately OEM acceptance. However, where project requirements allow, standalone Lidar gives us a flexible way of obtaining high-quality measurement data early in the development process."
For ZX Measurement Services, supporting customers extends well beyond supplying measurement equipment. By combining wind Lidar technology with deployment, field services and portable power solutions, customers benefit from a complete measurement solution delivered by a single experienced team.
Joanna Cadman-Goodwin, Head of Commercial & Customer Experience at ZX Measurement Services, said: "Developers are looking for flexible measurement campaigns that can be deployed quickly while delivering trusted wind measurements. We're pleased to be supporting Wind2 with both our technology and field services, helping them obtain the high-quality data they need to support projects from the earliest stages of development."
Through the combination of ZX Lidars technology and the practical support provided by ZX Measurement Services, Wind2 continues to evolve its wind measurement strategy while maintaining the flexibility to select the most appropriate measurement approach for each project.
