WALDEVAR Expands Its Presence in Italy with Integrated Solutions for the Next Generation of Energy Projects
Published in: Solar, Press Releases
Milan, October 12th 2026 – WALDEVAR is expanding its presence in the Italian market, one of the strategic directions of the group’s international growth, through the development of large-scale photovoltaic projects and the expansion of its expertise into agrivoltaics, energy storage and grid infrastructure.
In recent years, Italy has become an important market for renewable energy investment, driven by the need for new generation capacity and pressure from energy costs. In this context, WALDEVAR is already involved in a cluster of five photovoltaic projects in Calabria, with a total capacity of over 25 MW, while changes in the regulatory framework are creating conditions for new opportunities. The operational rules for the FER X scheme were approved in August 2026, with the first competitive procedures scheduled for the end of the year.
These development areas will also be addressed at Energyear Italia, taking place in Milan from 13 to 15 October. Discussions at the event are part of broader efforts to identify concrete development opportunities in the local market, in line with its needs and specific characteristics.
WALDEVAR’s strategy in Italy covers the entire energy project value chain, from engineering and construction to grid connection and operations. Alongside conventional photovoltaics, the company is pursuing opportunities in agrivoltaics, floating PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Following the completion and commissioning of its first projects, WALDEVAR also intends to develop local operations and maintenance (O&M) services.
Agrivoltaics is one of the segments with significant development potential, but the success of these projects depends on adapting technical solutions to the crops and working conditions on site. Panel positioning, structure height and machinery access must be designed to allow energy generation to coexist with agricultural activity while maintaining land productivity. Soil moisture sensors, micro-irrigation systems and crop-monitoring technologies can help optimise these systems. For example, in white asparagus cultivation, which requires limited light exposure, controlled shading may be considered as part of the technical solution, subject to agronomic studies and an assessment of local conditions.
“Agrivoltaics is not about putting panels above agricultural land and hoping the two activities will work together. First and foremost, it is an engineering challenge. Design must start with the specific crop, the machinery that needs to operate on the land and local conditions, so that agricultural activity remains viable and energy production is efficient. We see one of our main opportunities in Italy in bringing WALDEVAR’s EPC experience and execution capacity to a model in which energy and agriculture are designed together, not separately,” says Alberto Corò, Technical Director Italy at WALDEVAR Energy.
In parallel, the company is exploring opportunities to develop floating PV projects in Italy. Although the technology is not yet widely deployed in this market, water surfaces offer potential for renewable energy generation. The group’s experience in floating photovoltaic projects provides a technical foundation for exploring this segment in collaboration with local partners from both the public and private sectors.
Another challenge for renewable energy projects in Italy is grid connection. Through WALDEVAR Power Grid, the group’s division specialising in electrical infrastructure and high-voltage works, WALDEVAR draws on more than 30 years of experience built by ELEMO in this field, further strengthening its EPC execution capabilities.
“Italy needs to rapidly increase its renewable generation capacity, and photovoltaics offers a significant advantage through the speed with which projects can move from development to production. At the same time, the next challenge is integrating this capacity into the energy system: we need storage, grid infrastructure and engineering solutions tailored to each project. That is why WALDEVAR’s development in Italy is not limited to solar, but covers the entire value chain, from generation to grid integration,” Alberto Corò added.
Through its integrated model, WALDEVAR covers the main stages of a project, from engineering and procurement to construction, grid connection, operations and maintenance. The group has more than 2,000 specialists and its own execution capacity, supported by equipment and technical resources, enabling it to mobilise teams quickly for projects across multiple European markets.
Italy is therefore one of the markets in which WALDEVAR is building its next stage of international growth, focusing on projects where engineering, execution and integration into energy infrastructure are treated as a single process.
