Trelleborg Awarded Contract by Seaway 7 to provide NjordGuard Cable Protection for RWE’s Kaskasi Offshore Wind Farm Project in Germany

Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation has been awarded a contract by Seaway 7, Subsea 7’s renewables business unit, to provide 86 integrated cable protection systems for RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind farm project, located in the North Sea, Germany. Trelleborg’s NjordGuard cable protection system will be used to protect inter array grid power cables on the project, from over-bending, abrasion, and fatigue.

Daniel Bate, Sales Manager for renewables at Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation, states: “’We are delighted that Seaway 7 has chosen Trelleborg’s NjordGuard cable protection system on what is a milestone project for us. Trelleborg have now supplied over 30 offshore wind projects worldwide, with this one seeing us continue to provide industry-leading protection solutions to the offshore wind market, whilst continuing our relationship with Seaway 7.”

Production of the 86 NjordGuard cable protection systems will take place in Trelleborg’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the North of England. Project engineering works will commence immediately, with installation activities scheduled for execution at the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022.

NjordGuard is an integrated cable protection system designed and developed to protect offshore wind farm power cables in wind turbine generators and offshore substations. Easily assembled on a cable lay vessel to allow speedy installation, the system is manufactured in highly abrasion resistant and API 17L certified Uraduct® material. This enables the protection system to travel over the seabed without damage, extending the system life. Most importantly, it facilitates easier installation, reuse, and removal without diver and ROV intervention, optimizing efficiency and maximizing safety.

Located 35 kilometers north of the island of Heligoland, RWE’s Kaskasi offshore wind farm will feature 38 up to nine-megawatt wind turbine generators. The wind turbine generators, as well as the offshore substation, will be installed on monopile foundations.
