Tekmar seals deal with Van Oord on major Dutch offshore wind farm project

Tekmar Energy has marked a hat trick of contract wins with leading international EPC contractor Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects BV after being awarded work on the Eneco Luchterduinen offshore wind farm development in Holland.

The contract reinforces Tekmar´s market-leading track record in delivering bespoke cable protections systems. Tekmar has been involved in more than 25 high profile offshore wind projects and supplied over 3,000 systems since its entry into the market.

Tekmar´s latest contract win will see the company supply its cable protection systems to Van Oord which is responsible for the construction of the Eneco Luchterduinen wind farm, located about 23 kilometres from the Dutch coast in Block Q10 of the North Sea.

It is the third contract of its kind that Tekmar has been awarded by Van Oord. The company has also been involved in supporting Van Oord with the Eneco Luchterduinen project at an early stage by providing support on the design of the J-tubes for the Offshore High Voltage Substation and cable entry interface on the foundations and will provide offshore support for the project during start up.

The scope of work for the latest contract will see Tekmar work with NKT Cables and LS Cable as the cable suppliers and Van Oord as the installer for a total of 87 cable protection systems including seven bellmouths of which six are for array cables and one is for the export cable. Tekmar will also provide full engineering of its systems to protect the power cables for their 25 year service life. It will be the sixth project in which Tekmar provides protection for NKT Cables.

James Ritchie, chief executive officer at Tekmar, which has expanded into new state-of-the-art testing and engineering facilities at its County Durham headquarters, said: “The award win on another major project demonstrates our industry reputation for delivering high-value solutions which are underpinned by our engineering expertise. Our J-tubeless cable protection system, TekLink, remains to be the markets leading solution.”

Wilbert van Boldrik, project manager from Van Oord: “We are glad with this next step in the preparation for the offshore works for the Eneco Luchterduinen wind farm, which is about to start in June 2014. We look forward to a fruitful co-operation with Tekmar which we selected to supply the cable protection systems”.

Eneco Luchterduinen is a joint venture between Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation. The development, numbering 43 wind turbines, will have a combined capacity of 129 MW and generate green electricity for nearly 150,000 households. Tekmar, which provides bespoke cable protection systems to both the global oil & gas and offshore renewables industries, further underpinned its commitment to cost reduction and innovation in the offshore wind industry last month when it launched a new innovation.

The TekTube cable protection system reduces installation time and costs, and minimises associated cable risks.

TekTube has been developed utilising the same protection methodology as the market-leading, proven industry standard TekLink system. The TekLink system, which is designed for a 30-year life time, revolutionises the connection of subsea power cables into monopile foundations. TekTube offers an alternative to TekLink for jacket, gravity-base and floating foundations

Tekmar, which is headquartered in the North-East of England at County Durham, developed its proprietary technologies at its state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) and manufacturing hub to meet the needs of the evolving market.

Tekmar

With over 25 years experience, Tekmar is a market leader in the design, manufacture and supply of subsea cables, umbilicals and flexible protection systems for the renewable energy and oil & gas industry.

Tekmar has pioneered the development of the Teklink system that has been successfully delivered into large offshore wind farms across Europe while its newly-launched TekTube system further enhances the company’s suite of pioneering technologies.

Eneco Luchterduinen

Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation have joined forces to create a new and innovative offshore wind farm, 23 km off the coast and parallel to Noordwijk and Zandvoort. The Eneco Luchterduinen wind farm, which will consist of 43 wind turbines, is set to have a generating capacity of 129 megawatts and will supply almost 150,000 homes with green power. Furthermore, the project offers space for field-testing of innovative foundations and innovative installation technology, acting as an impetus for the offshore industry and contributing to a cost reduction of offshore wind power. Construction will start in the second half of 2014, with the wind farm going operational in 2015.
