Northern Turbine Services, a specialist provider of installation, repair, and maintenance for onshore wind turbines, has secured £300,000 in funding from the Royal Bank of Scotland to purchase its leased premises in Orkney, establishing a permanent base for future expansion.
Founded in 2015, Northern Turbine Services specialises in the maintenance of smaller onshore wind turbines, many of which were installed when subsidy tariffs were high, providing an attractive financial incentive for the development of such renewable energy sources.
As these turbines move out of warranty, many models are taken out of commission or cease working, creating a need for organisations such as Northern Turbine Services to step in and provide crucial maintenance, often at large scale, ensuring continued renewable energy contributions to the grid.
With a team of 18 employees and a turnover of £2.5 million, Northern Turbine Services plays a vital role in Scotland's renewable energy sector. The purchase of its Orkney premises will provide stability, allowing for improved service delivery and long-term planning.
Adrian Kerins, Director at Northern Turbine Services, said: "Securing this funding from Royal Bank of Scotland is a crucial step for our business.
"By owning our Orkney base, we can enhance our operations, improve efficiencies, and make plans for the future.
"This investment underpins our long-term commitment to renewable energy and sustainability in Scotland. Many of our customers are farmers and landowners who rely on their turbines as part of their renewable energy mix. By ensuring these turbines remain operational, we're helping them continue generating clean energy and financial returns."
Margaret Keenan, Senior Relationship Manager at Royal Bank of Scotland, commented: "Northern Turbine Services operate in a key sector for Scotland's renewable energy transition. Their expertise in maintaining smaller onshore wind turbines is hugely important in preserving the efficiency and life cycle of the units. Orkney is one of the leading regions in the UK for the renewable energy sector and NTS plays a crucial role in supporting the operators on the island. We're proud to support NTS as they make preparations for future growth."
Royal Bank of Scotland's Future Fit research outlined the value in Scottish businesses considering the commercial benefits from considering their energy consumption and sources - as well as the opportunities it can offer.
