Nick Welch has joined Liquid Gas UK as Deputy CEO and Sustainability Director, to accelerate the industry-wide commitment to deliver renewable liquid gases to rural homes and businesses across the UK.

With over 20 years’ experience in energy and climate policy, including co-managing Shell’s global climate change strategy and advising on carbon capture policy in Washington D.C., Mr Welch brings expertise in shaping pragmatic energy policy that balances sustainability with affordability.

Mr Welch said: “Liquid Gas UK members have a critical role in ensuring rural communities have access to clean, secure and affordable renewable energy for their heating needs. I’m looking forward to working with government and industry to deliver practical solutions for both businesses and households in the renewable energy transition.”

His arrival strengthens the leadership team at a time when decisions on heat decarbonisation will define the energy future for off-grid communities.

“The energy transition is more complex than many realise. There isn’t a single solution to suit the diverse needs of the UK population,” said Mr Welch.

“That’s why we need to back technologies like renewable liquid gases that work in places where heat pumps or full electrification aren’t practical or economic. Otherwise, rural homes and businesses risk being left behind.”

Liquid Gas UK advocates a mixed-technology approach to Net Zero, which allows home and business owners choose the best low carbon fuel to suit their property needs.

Mr Welch adds: “The needs of rural communities must be factored into policy making and legislation. Drop-in renewable liquid gases like bioLPG and renewable dimethyl ether (rDME) offer a practical solution that works, cutting carbon by up to 90% while keeping energy secure.

“Investment in infrastructure is underway, and we have the potential to significantly scale up renewable liquid gas supply over the next decade.”

George Webb, CEO of Liquid Gas UK, added: “Nick’s appointment is a milestone in the industry’s journey to Net Zero. His expertise will help ensure renewable liquid gases play their full role in the UK’s energy transition.
