The wood technology company Modvion is now announcing its new wooden wind turbine tower, engineered for the largest onshore wind turbines. The tower has been given third party approval and will now be adapted for series production.

The new tower is designed to support a V162 - 6.4MW turbine from the Vestas Enventus platform with 35 years lifetime. The tower design has been evaluated by the independent certification body TÜV SÜD and received a design evaluation conformity statement.

"Having this stamp of approval for one of the largest onshore turbines available is a great leap forward" says Otto Lundman, CEO at Modvion. "Our modular wind turbine towers dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by replacing steel and concrete with wood, whilst enabling highly efficient, taller installations without transport bottlenecks."

The design evaluation was completed by TÜV SÜD and the conformity statement was officially handed over at their wind towers conference held in Munich on 28th February.  The design evaluation is based on a full review of technical data and testing methodology and confirms that the design meets the international quality standards IECRE OD-501 in combination with OD-501-3.

"The tower design meets all the requirements from the industry and has been thoroughly tested. We look forward to a continued collaboration with Modvion to bring wind turbine towers made of wood to the European market" said Stephan Mayer, Head of Support Structures on- and offshore at TÜV SÜD.

The tower was designed to demonstrate that Modvion's wind turbine tower technology can be scaled up for the most powerful wind turbines onshore. Now the company is focusing on adapting the design for series production where they will produce towers with hub heights up to 219 metres.

"We look forward to supplying the wind industry with towers manufactured in Sweden, and contributing to the strengthening of Europe's clean energy supply chain" says Otto Lundman.

About Modvion

Swedish wood technology company Modvion develops demanding designs made of laminated wood, nature's carbon fibre, for large-scale applications. Wooden designs enable radical reductions in emissions by replacing emission-heavy materials such as steel and concrete. Thanks to their patented module system, Modvion has been able to develop cost-effective wind turbine towers and more efficient transportation for installations of tall towers. The operation is part-financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, the Västra Götaland region, and the EU program Horizon 2020 EIC Accelerator.
