Modvion enters Grant Agreement Preparation for €39 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund to establish series production for wooden wind turbine towers
Published in: Wind, Press Releases
The Swedish wood technology company Modvion has been selected by the European Commission to enter Grant Agreement Preparation by the Innovation Fund. The grant of up to €39.1 million will be used to establish series production for wooden wind turbine towers.
In a highly competitive call with 359 applications, Modvion was selected as one of 61 projects where the Innovation Fund has allocated a total of €2.9 billion. The selected projects are estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 221 million tonnes over a ten year period. With support from the Innovation Fund, Modvion will scale up to supply the growing onshore wind market. The project is set to establish series production of wooden wind turbine towers with hub heights of up to 200 meters, designed for turbines of 6 megawatts and above.
“The Innovation Fund grant will enable Modvion to scale production capacity to meet the demand from the European wind industry,” said Maria-Lina Hedlund, CEO at Modvion. “Our towers enable taller wind turbines to increase the efficiency and profitability of wind energy, all while replacing hard-to-abate steel and concrete.”
The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technologies. It supports projects with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen Europe’s resilience through cleantech manufacturing.
“Increasing renewable energy infrastructure and production is strategically vital for the EU. Modvion contributes to that build out while bringing together two strong European industries, wood and wind power.” adds Maria-Lina Hedlund.
Modvion now enters the GAP phase to finalise and sign the grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The grant agreement is planned to be signed by the end of Q1 2026.

About Modvion
Modvion is a Swedish company at the forefront of wood technology, with a patented wind turbine tower made from engineered wood. By replacing emission-heavy materials such as steel and concrete, Modvion’s wooden towers deliver significant reductions in carbon emissions. Thanks to a patented modular design, the towers are easy to transport and enable cost-effective, taller turbines that increase energy production and financial returns. In partnership with Vestas, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, Modvion erected its first commercial wooden tower in 2024, which has now been operating successfully for more than 15,000 hours. The project is part-financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.
About Innovation Fund
The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technologies. Financed through an estimated €40 billion in revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), it supports projects with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost cleantech manufacturing, and drive investment in cutting-edge technologies that advance Europe’s transition to climate neutrality.
