Ground-breaking: Construction of the warehouse facility for Nordseecluster offshore wind farm underway in Port of Eemshaven. image

On Monday 8th September, a ground-breaking ceremony was held at the Port of Eemshaven to mark the official start of construction of a state-of-the-art warehouse facility to support the operations and maintenance of Nordseecluster, a joint offshore wind project of RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%).

The new building, approximately 1,700 square metres in size, will be located in the Beatrixhaven at the premises of Clarkson Port Services. The facility is expected to be completed by the end of Q1 2026. RWE will take a long-term lease on the new facility.

With a planned capacity of 1.6 gigawatt, Nordseecluster A and B will be able to generate enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of 1,600,000 German households and is the largest wind project currently being built off the German coast - approximately 50 km north of the island of Juist.

Representatives from the Eemshaven Port Authority, construction company Bouwgroep Noord, Civil Technical Advise & Management company InvraPlus, RWE and Clarkson Port Services BV, broke the ground together to kick-off the construction works, which are scheduled to take around seven months to complete.

Starting in Summer 2026, a Service Operation Vessel (SOV)and Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) will operate from the base to transport workers to the offshore wind turbines. The base is designed to support the long-term operation and maintenance of Nordseecluster A and B, which is expected to be fully operational in 2029.

Wim Schouwenaar, Managing Director of Clarkson Port Services: “After securing the long-term agreements with RWE for this O&M facility, we now reach the next milestone: the start of construction on the operations building. Meanwhile, work on the wind farm itself is already progressing from our port. This once again highlights the trust RWE places in us as their local partner, and in Eemshaven as a versatile port fully equipped to support every phase of wind farm development, operations, and maintenance. We look forward not only to the progress of the building’s construction but most of all, to build and expand a strong collaboration with RWE. The growing visibility of RWE’s presence in the port will benefit the local supply chain and workforce for many years to come.”

Derk Niklas Janssen, RWE operations manager for the Nordseecluster adds: “It is a pleasure to officially kick-off the construction of the state-of-the-art warehouse, which will meet the needs of our Nordseecluster operations and maintenance team. With an overall capacity of around 1.6 gigawatts, Nordseecluster is the largest wind project currently being built off the German coast. For its efficient operation we need storage space and excellent port logistics – both will be delivered by Clarkson Port Services.”
