European Solar Prize 2011 – Pioneers leading the way into the future


Twelve winners from eight countries were presented with this year’s European Solar Prize in Berlin on 2 December 2011. The award ceremony was held at the Berlin branch of KfW Bankengruppe. Words of commendation were said by Jo Leinen, Member of the European Parliament.

In their welcome speeches Dr Axel Nawrath, Member of the KfW Executive Board, and Prof Peter Droege, President of EUROSOLAR, emphasized the diverse range of ideas and practical applications the recipients used to exemplary effect on the deployment of renewable energy. The annual European Solar Prize is handed out by EUROSOLAR, the European Association for Renewable Energy, in cooperation with KfW Bankengruppe.

Recognized and celebrated this year in the following categories were:

Towns/municipalities, council districts, public utilities
– The District of Rhein-Hunsrück (Germany)
– The City of Svoge (Bulgaria)

Industrial and commercial companies or farmers
– Younicos AG (Germany)

Owners or operators of renewable energy installations
– Heizplan AG (Switzerland)

Local or regional associations/organizations
– The Danish Small Wind Turbine Association (Denmark)

Solar architecture and urban planning
– Architetture Sostenibili (Italy)

Media
– “Green Nature”, CNN Türk (Turkey)

Education and vocational training
– Fundación Sotavento Galicia (Spain)

One-world cooperation
– Phaesun GmbH (Germany)

Josef Meisl (Austria) and Petra Jebens-Zirkel (Spain) were recognized through the special achievement prize for their individual commitment. A special award was also given to the Swiss Federal Council, particularly to four of its members, for the Swiss phase-out of nuclear energy. It was accepted by the Swiss Ambassador in Berlin, Dr Tim Guldimann.

Established in 1994 the annual European Solar Prize has since been given to reward projects and initiatives for outstanding contribution to the use of renewable energy.
