Eemshaven, Netherlands – 03.19.2025 – Buss Terminal Eemshaven B.V. (BTE), in collaboration with Groningen Seaports (GSP), has launched the WINdQUAY project, a significant infrastructure upgrade designed to further strengthen the heavy-duty quay capacities at Eemshaven’s Buss Terminal. Co-funded by the European Union through the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), the project aims to expand the terminal’s infrastructure to support the growing offshore wind energy sector in the North Sea.
Expanding Terminal Capacity for Offshore Energy Projects
The primary goal of the WINdQUAY project is to increase the load bearing capacity of parts of the existing quay area to provide additional flexibility to service heavy-duty offshore wind installation vessels at the largest offshore wind terminal in the European Nort Sea. The quay area will be reinforced, and soil conditions will be improved to handle the significant loads of wind turbine components and the installation vessels during load-ins and load-outs. The quay area will be upgraded to withstand a load bearing capacity of 40 t/ m².
“The WINdQUAY project is a pivotal step in enhancing the infrastructure at Buss Terminal Eemshaven. By building another heavy-duty quay, we are increasing flexibility and creating a more efficient base for offshore wind energy projects in the North Sea,” says Marc Wegman, Managing Director at Buss Terminal Eemshaven. “With the growing role of offshore wind in the European energy transition, this development will further strengthen BTE´s significance as port logistics expert.”
The improvements to the quay and surrounding infrastructure underline Buss Terminal Eemshaven’s role as the key partner for offshore wind projects in the North Sea region.
