Utilising duplex coatings on wind turbine components can significantly reduce running costs by offering enhanced corrosion protection and extended service life in harsh environments, an expert has revealed.
Critical components within the wind and renewable energy markets - including studs, bolts, nuts and collars - must be treated with high-quality coatings to ensure they stand up to the challenging environments in which they operate.
Steve Norman, Group Commercial & Divisional Director at the Anochrome Group, said OEMs can help reduce running costs of machinery by utilising two-part duplex finishes to any part exposed to the elements.
Duplex systems combine electroplated zine or zinc-nickel base coatings with e-coat powder coat or zinc flake top coat.
Steve said: “The performance of duplex coatings has been validated on multiple offshore wind farms, demonstrating maintenance-free service in corrosive marine atmospheres over decades.
“Lifecycle cost analysis confirms that these coatings can significantly reduce total ownership costs compared to paint only or single layer systems.
“These can also be paired with advanced locking and sealing solutions to boost performance still further.
“Using just one supplier for coating, sealing and locking is beneficial as it ensures compatibility and reduces procurement complexity.
“Offshore wind farms face some of the toughest conditions on the planet so it is important to take expert advice for best performance.”
Inlex Locking – part of the Anochrome Group – offers Rimlex® underhead sealants, precote® micro-encapsulated threadlockers or sealants and Nylok® underhead sealants or pre-applied nylon patches to complement the duplex solutions.
Rimlex provides resilience up to around 150°C while precote® is effective up to around 170°C.
Anochrome’s solutions are suitable for turbine tower structural fasteners, nacelle and hub mounting bolts, blade root bolts and hub fasteners, offshore platform and foundation fasteners and electrical cabinets and control panels.
All materials meet ISO 14001, ISO 12944-5 and industry-specific corrosion standards.
