Digital Photonics Corporation Introduces Uniquely Scalable Solarjet Ink Jet Solution For Selective Emitter Applications


The Digital Photonics Corporation (DPC) (www.thinkfly.com.tw) announces the global launch of the SolarJetTM printer for selective emitter application of solar front contacts (c-Si). The SolarJet printer greatly simplifies offline process feasibility by making it possible for labs to quickly, accurately and cost-effectively gauge real world performance benefits before making larger in-line investments. Once feasibility is confirmed, the system can be easily scaled up for larger print runs. The system features cutting-edge inkjet components from Trident Solar (www.tridentsolarcell.com), generating enhanced efficiency and reduced scrap rates.

The SolarJet simplifies feasibility testing by allowing for scalable and highly indicative test runs. Wafers are fed from underneath along a conveyer belt (as in typical production runs) to provide accurate production simulation. Up to three separate photovoltaic materials (such as etchants, dopants and dielectric layers) can be deposited in a single run- further simplifying and speeding testing processes.
The SolarJet system is the first in the industry to use the new VersaEtchTM Etchant / n-Dopant combination material from Trident Solar as a precursor to screen printing of front silver contacts. The VersaEtch Etchant / n-Dopant provides efficient and effective removal of the anti-reflective SiNx top layer allowing for maximum contact between silver contacts and silicon. It then works as an n-dopant as it penetrates the silicon emitter directly below the contacts. This non-contact combination of etchant and dopant can match the enhanced cell efficiency (0.5-1.0%) and precise deposition performance (demonstrated 50 micron print) of other selective emitter approaches, while offering the additional benefit of generating up to a 10x reduction in costly wafer scrap.

The SolarJet printer also contains multiple inert, stainless steel Trident 256Jet-S printheads. Unlike disposable inkjet technologies or graphics printheads that were adapted to solar applications, the Trident 256Jet-S was specifically designed to deliver consistent performance in the deposition of aggressive solar process fluids such as acidic dopants and alkaline etchants. The printheads also feature a unique repairable design – that allows the nozzle plate to be disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned and reassembled. These features allow the 256Jet-S printhead to last up to 5 times longer than alternative inkjet printheads and provide an industry leading one year warranty.
