Varel/Husum, 2025-09-16: Deutsche WindGuard celebrated its 25th anniversary with a big reception at its headquarters in Varel, Germany, in early September. Together with customers, companions and representatives from businesses, politics and industry associations, the hosts around company founders Axel Albers, Gerhard Gerdes and Dr Knud Rehfeldt recalled their start as one of the first providers of independent technical management for wind farms back in 2000.

“In the beginning, we were a small start-up. Modern wind energy generation was about 15 years old with a contribution to the electricity supply of one to two per cent,” said Managing Director Gerhard Gerdes, who has been dedicated to wind energy for his entire 40-year professional career. “So we founded Deutsche WindGuard at just the right time.” The rapid development of wind energy in the following years constantly inspired the experts from Varel to develop new services, which laid the foundation for the company's growth, added Managing Director Dr Knud Rehfeldt in his anniversary speech. “Changes in the political landscape repeatedly led to deviating expansion figures. That's why right from the beginning, we were keen not to be dependent on one single political market, only. To date, we have performed projects in around 70 countries around the globe, generate half of our revenue with projects outside Germany and established subsidiaries in the USA, China and India already years ago.” With around 200 employees, Deutsche WindGuard is one of the most comprehensive service providers in the industry worldwide.

“In terms of expansion targets, Lower Saxony is Germany’s number one energy state. And we are proud of that,” emphasised Lower Saxony’s Minister President Olaf Lies in his speech. He particularly focused on the acceptance of renewable energies, which requires a clear framework, consistent underground grid development and the expansion of offshore wind energy. With its expertise, Deutsche WindGuard was a competent partner to Lower Saxony’s government on important issues such as the development of ports and the future of wind energy and hydrogen, he added.

Mayor Gerd-Christian Wagner expressed his gratitude for the company's clear commitment to Varel as its domicile: “The name of our town plays an integral role in the energy transition. Highly qualified employees find attractive jobs here, young people discover exciting perspectives for their professional future, science and industry work hand in hand.”

In her guest lecture, Professor Dr Claudia Kemfert developed perspectives for the coming years at the current turning point between the transformation of the energy system and new challenges posed by global crises.

At twelve stops across its campus, Deutsche WindGuard also offered the anniversary guests insights into its portfolio of around 60 services along the entire wind energy value chain. This week, Deutsche WindGuard looks forward to welcoming visitors at HUSUM WIND in Hall 4, booth 4D03.
