  • Commencement of construction of two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) of nominal capacity 98 MW / 196 MWh
    • Melitis 1: total installed capacity of 48/96 MWh in Melitis area in Western Macedonia
    • "Ptolemaida 4": total installed capacity of 50 MW/100 MWh in the former lignite mines of Ptolemaida.
  • The storage projects optimise the management of RES generation, maximise their contribution, utilize the potential of RES electricity generation and contribute to the stability of the energy system.

PPC Group is beginning the construction of two new energy storage stations (BESS) in Western Macedonia, in Northern Greece. The first one is "Melitis 1" station with a total installed storage capacity of 48 MW/96 MWh, which will be constructed in the vicinity of the photovoltaic plants to be developed by the Company in Western Macedonia. The second is "Ptolemaida 4" with a total installed capacity of 50 MW /100 MWh in the region of the former mines of Ptolemaida.

For the construction of the two stations, liquid-cooled batteries using innovative LFP technology will be used, maximising both energy utilisation and safety during operation. The construction of "Melitis 1" and "Ptolemaida 4" is expected to be completed within the year.

Said stations are intended to support the operation of the adjacent photovoltaic plants and will contribute to the stability of the energy system.

Through the operation of these stations, as well as of future energy storage stations, the generation management of RES plants will be optimised, their contribution will be maximised and the potential for electricity generation from RES will be fully exploited.

PPC Group is planning 600 MW of energy storage projects BESS

In line with its commitment to lignite phase-out and energy transition, PPC Group is spearheading innovation through the implementation of various projects aimed at facilitating the management of electricity generation, while simultaneously enhancing the overall resilience and security of the country's power grid.

Based on the investment plan for the 2025-2027 period, PPC Group is planning the operation of storage projects BESS of 600 MW, which are currently at various stages of implementation in Greece and Southeastern Europe.

About two months ago, PPC Group announced the commencement of construction of an energy storage station with a nominal capacity of 25 MW and installed capacity of 55 MWh in neighboring Bulgaria. This station will support the operation of the new photovoltaic plant using batteries, with a total installed capacity of 165 MW, located in the Stara Zagora region of Bulgaria, and will contribute to the stability of the electricity grid.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of RES PPC Group, Mr. Konstantinos Mavros stated that "the projects to be implemented in the coming years will shape the future of the energy system in our country. The investments in storage systems which are currently developed worldwide will ensure the optimal use of energy generation from RES and, additionally  the stability of the electricity grid in our country, as well as throughout the European continent. PPC is a leader in this process since in the coming years it will significantly increase investments in all flexible generation systems through energy storage".

The main development arm of .PPC Group's RES portfolio is its wholly-owned subsidiary, PPC Renewables. The company has a groundbreaking activity, both at national and European level, in wind and solar energy since the 1980s. It spearheads innovation both in Greece and in the wider region of Southeastern Europe, through its activities in all RES technologies, as well as in battery energy storage systems. PPC Group currently owns a total portfolio of RES projects with an installed capacity of 6.2GW in Greece, Romania, Italy, and Bulgaria. The aim of the investment plan of PPC Group is to increase the installed capacity from RES to 11.8 GW by 2027.

The strategic goal of the company is to further expand its portfolio into new RES technologies, such as offshore wind farms and floating solar parks, as well as to develop energy storage systems using batteries.
