Collett, a leading UK specialist in wind turbine transportlogistics, has successfully completed all deliveries to EDF power solutionsUK’s Stranoch Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

The project involved the complex transport of 189 components tofacilitate the construction of 20 Vestas turbines. The wind farm comprisedthree different models: nine V150s, seven V136s, and four V117s, making theproject a unique logistical undertaking due to the varied requirements of eachturbine type.

All components arrived via Cairnryan Port, due to limited storagecapacity at the port, Collett’s team coordinated the transport sequence toensure each component arrived at the specific turbine pad exactly when requiredfor the pre-construction phase.

The 8.4-mile transport route from CairnryanPort to the site consisted primarily of rural, single-track roads, presentingsignificant challenges for the larger components. To manage these constraints, all turbine blades across the three different models were transported usingNooteboom Super Wing Carriers. This included the 74-metre V150 blades, whichare the longest blades Collett has delivered in the UK using this specifictrailer type.

Tower sections were transported on Nooteboom tower clamp trailers, while nacelles were delivered using a combination of step-frame and clamptrailers. The remaining components, including hubs and drive trains, weretransported on 6 and 8-axle step-frame trailers.

To maintain a strict schedule, deliveries oftenoperated on a double-shift pattern on many weekdays, typically transporting twoto components in the morning followed by two to three components in theafternoon. Each movement was supported by a dedicated police escort team aswell as Collett’s in-house escort fleet.

Collett’s project team included six truckdrivers, six escort drivers, two tow truck drivers and a comprehensivemanagement team comprising a site manager, a dedicated project manager andassistant project manager. Throughout the operation, Collett worked in closepartnership with EDF power solution’s onsite team, Police Scotland, TransportScotland, Dumfries & Galloway Council and AMEY to ensure safety and minimallocal disruption.

EDF power solutions UK’s Stranoch Wind Farmis a consented onshore project near New Luce and Barrhill, with a totalinstalled capacity of 102MW. EDF power solutions UK has worked closely withlocal stakeholders to minimise impact setting up a dedicated text messagingservice for residents to notify them of movements.
