Steinach, Switzerland – 29. October 2026 – Swiss timber specialist Leimholz Haag AG is adding two commercial battery storage systems to capture more of the energy generated by its 520.76 kWp SolarEdge rooftop solar system.
Originally commissioned in June 2025, the solar installation already supplies around 54% of the Leimholz Haag AG’s electricity needs, which has cut approximately 235,000 kg of CO₂ emissions and delivered approximately CHF 35,000 in energy cost savings annually. The company will now add two SolarEdge CSS-OD 197 commercial battery storage systems this autumn, increasing expected solar self-consumption to 72% and enabling peak shaving to further reduce energy costs.
Leimholz Haag AG is a Swiss family-owned specialist in the trade, processing and engineering of timber and wood-based construction products, serving customers nationwide. While timber is central to the company’s sustainability credentials, its manufacturing operations remain energy intensive – making lower-carbon, lower-cost electricity an important priority. As a result, solar energy today powers a variety of buildings and machinery across the site, as well as the on-site production of nitrogen used as part of the company’s fire-protection strategy. The PV system supports this strategy by reducing reliance on grid electricity and lowering energy costs.
Peter Haag, Managing Director at Leimholz Haag AG, comments: “Energy has always been a significant cost for our business, exacerbated more recently by volatility in energy prices. The investment in solar energy has had an immediate impact, supplying more than half of our electricity needs and delivering substantial annual savings. Battery storage is the logical next step because it will allow us to use more of the solar energy we produce, while also reducing the amount of power we need to draw from the grid during periods of high demand. For an operation like ours, where energy-intensive machinery is operating at the same time, being able to use stored solar energy to smooth out the spikes in demand will make a significance difference to our electricity costs.”
The two SolarEdge CSS-OD 197 commercial battery storage systems are expected to enable Leimholz Haag AG to store up to 394kWh of surplus solar energy generated during periods of lower demand and use it later when consumption rises. The batteries are managed by SolarEdge ONE for C&I, an energy optimization system that monitors solar production, site consumption and battery performance to optimize how energy is used across the site. This not only enables Leimholz Haag AG to maximize solar self-consumption but also optimize peak shaving by lowering costly demand peaks.
Achieving high solar production across the site presented a significant design challenge. The installation spans several buildings with different roof heights and orientations, including east- and west-facing surfaces, while a 25-metre storage tower casts moving shadows across lower roofs throughout the day.
To mitigate the impact of shading on energy yields, the installer CE Concept Energy AG specified SolarEdge’s DC-optimized inverter technology. Power Optimizers installed on the underside of every pair of solar panels allow them to operate independently from others on the same string. As a result, if individual panels are affected by shading or other mismatch losses, the performance of the rest of the string is not reduced to the level of the affected panels. This was crucial for Leimholz Haag AG, ensuring maximum energy production from the available roof space.
Safety was another critical consideration. At Leimholz Haag AG, large quantities of timber are stored and processed on site, making fire prevention a high priority, particularly following a major fire at a previous facility around 14 years ago. The PV system incorporates arc-fault protection, designed to detect and interrupt potential arc faults. It also features SafeDC™, an advanced capability designed to reduce the PV system’s high DC voltage to touch-safe levels when the inverter or grid is shut down. This helps provide safer access for maintenance personnel and emergency responders.
Martin Mäder, Co-owner of CE Concept Energy AG adds: “Leimholz Haag AG’s investment exemplifies the growing demand we are seeing for commercial storage systems, as more and more businesses seek to reduce reliance on the grid and maximize the value of the solar at a time when energy costs are so high. Having PV, storage and energy management from SolarEdge gives the customer an integrated system, which in my experience better optimizes how that energy is generated, stored and used.
“From an installer perspective, working with one technology provider also makes it easier for us to design, commission and manage the complete system, and to support customers like Leimholz Haag AG as their energy needs evolve,” he concludes.
