Balance Power secures planning approval for 49.5MW Radwell Bury battery storage project
Published in: Solar, Press Releases

14 August 2025 – Balance Power, a leading independent energy developer, has secured planning approval for its 49.5MW battery storage project in Radwell Bury, Hertfordshire.
Designed to accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero, the facility will store surplus renewable energy and release it during periods of high demand, helping to unlock greater use of intermittent clean power sources. Once operational, it will help power approximately 26,767 homes and enhance the stability of the national energy system.
Comprising 48 battery units with a total storage duration of two hours, the Radwell Bury BESS project is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by around 18,281 tonnes annually – the equivalent of taking approximately 13,115 cars off the road or planting 29,250 trees.
As part of its long-standing commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity, Balance Power has confirmed the development will deliver a 44.25% biodiversity net gain across the site, incorporating a strong landscape scheme that will protect woodland belts, hedgerows, and meadow grasslands.
Approval for the Radwell Bury battery storage project was achieved from North Herts Council following an extensive community consultation process. Collaborating with the community, town council, and local district councillors, Balance Power addressed concerns and adapted the design to ensure that the project will meet community needs across its lifecycle.
Balance Power is now in the process of securing a grid connection date for the battery storage site. At the end of its lifecycle, the facility will be decommissioned, and the site will be fully restored to land for agricultural use.
Ryan Stott, Connections Team at Balance Power, said: “We’re pleased to have received unanimous approval for this vital project and appreciate the strong engagement from the community and local council throughout the process. As well as reinforcing national energy resilience, this site will contribute to local environmental goals and support the transition to a more sustainable future.
“It’s important to us that our developments leave a lasting positive legacy, and made sure we chose a site specifically out of the greenbelt, out of residential areas, and designed to enhance local biodiversity. We’re confident that Radwell Bury will deliver long-term value for both the community, the grid, and the local environment.
Since 2017, Balance Power has been pioneering decentralised energy projects across the UK, collaborating with landowners, communities, and councils to support grid stability and achieve national decarbonisation targets. It has successfully advanced 39 energy projects to planning consent, with over 2GW of projects in development. Balance Power continues to lead the transformation of the UK’s energy landscape.
