Adwen completes the commissioning of 40 turbines

Adwen has concluded the commissioning of the forty 5MW offshore turbines at Trianel wind farm Borkum, in the German North Sea. The forty AD 5-116 turbines (formerly known as M5000-116), are now operational, ready to feed an average of 800 GWh electricity yearly into the grid, meeting the electrical consumption of up to 200,000 German households a year and avoiding 1.6 million tons CO2 emissions.

The 200MW wind farm is located 45 km off the northern coast of the island of Borkum and directly adjacent to alpha ventus, Germany’s pilot offshore wind farm, where six Adwen 5MW turbines have been operating since 2009.

Adwen expertise and a reinforced logistic set up, involving up to 4 vessels, were crucial for Trianel wind farm Borkum commissioning, in rough offshore conditions.

The Trianel wind farm Borkum is also a testament to Adwen’s local commitment. The nacelles and blades were manufactured respectively in Bremerhaven and Stade, Germany, where Adwen directly employs 550 people as well as counting on the support of a strong local supply chain. At peak, the commissioning work itself mobilized up to 150 people based in Bremerhaven and up to 80 jobs will be mobilized in Bremerhaven and Emden for the operations and maintenance services, provided by Adwen for 5 years.
