Setting a new agenda in thermal imaging

A PV-focussed company that is attracting significant awareness outside the industry
– thanks to its innovative solutions and recently announced Innovation Partnership
with the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One team – FLIR is a shining light in the
sector. We spoke to Ruud Heijsman.

PES: Welcome back to PES. Would you like to begin by reminding us about how you serve the PV industry?

Ruud Heijsman: FLIR Systems is the world leader in the manufacture of thermal imaging cameras. Thermal imaging cameras are one of the most important measuring tools in the PV industry.

Building professionals all over the world use thermal imaging cameras to inspect solar panels installed on rooftops or in solar parks. With a thermal imaging camera, potential problem areas can be detected and repaired before actual problems or failures occur.
However, not every thermal imaging camera is suited for solar cell inspection, and there are some rules and guidelines that need to be followed in order to perform efficient inspections and to ensure that you draw correct conclusions.

The use of thermal imaging cameras for solar panel evaluation offers several advantages. Anomalies can clearly be seen on a thermal image and, unlike most other methods, thermal imaging cameras can be used to scan installed solar panels during normal operation.

PES: And how has business been since we last spoke? Where are you seeing signs of growth right now?

RH: Last year, the business in this market was not growing because customers were contained. In general, the investment in the PV market was not high.
Maintenance is more and more important in the PV market and with our thermal imaging cameras, customers have the right tool to check and control their PV constructions.
