Italy has strong wind resources and a growing pipeline of projects. The next step is getting those projects built and operational.
KEY 2027, taking place at Rimini Expo Centre from 10th to 12th March 2027, will bring the industry together to look at what is needed to move from ambition to delivery. Wind will have an expanded presence through WEM, Wind Expo for MED, bringing together onshore and offshore developers, manufacturers, investors, utilities and service providers.
Closing the deployment gap
According to the Italian National Wind Energy Association (ANEV), Italy installed 579.2 MW of new wind capacity in 2025, bringing total installed capacity to around 13.1 GW.
The challenge is not simply resource availability. Progress is influenced by several connected issues:
Offshore wind is gaining momentum, with both floating and fixed-bottom projects progressing through authorisation. Floating wind is particularly relevant because Italy’s deeper waters limit the suitability of conventional fixed foundations in many locations.
Getting project economics right
The definitive FER X decree, signed in June 2026, provides for up to 37.15 GW of new renewable capacity, including 16.5 GW allocated to wind through competitive procedures.
However, the earlier transitional auction demonstrated the importance of project economics. Around 940 MW of onshore wind was awarded from 2.5 GW available across 29 projects, at an average price of approximately €72.85/MWh.
A substantial proportion of the available capacity therefore remained unallocated.
For developers, future reference prices and auction conditions will need to provide sufficient investment certainty while maintaining competition.
Connecting wind with infrastructure
Wind development increasingly depends on infrastructure beyond the turbine itself.
For offshore projects, ports, vessels, fabrication facilities and logistics become particularly important as turbine and foundation dimensions increase. Grid reinforcement must also develop alongside new generating capacity.
KEY 2027 will address these links through its expanded WEM area and Su.port, Sustainable Ports for the Energy Transition.
The wider event also brings wind together with:
This cross-sector approach reflects the growing connection between renewable generation, storage, grid flexibility and electricity demand.
From ambition to implementation
KEY 2026 recorded a 10% increase in attendance and a 9% rise in international visitors. More than 1,000 exhibiting brands participated, including 320 international companies, alongside 530 hosted buyers and delegations from 59 countries.
For 2027, the more important question will be how the industry addresses the practical barriers between project development and construction.
Italy already has renewable resources, projects under development and a support framework intended to encourage new capacity. The next step is ensuring permitting, auctions, grids, finance, ports and industrial capacity develop at a compatible pace.
KEY 2027 will provide a meeting point for those different parts of the value chain as Italy works to turn its wind potential into operating assets.
